@WWIIMemorial a quibble: unless she was an exception, women were not allowed to join the WAVES before 20. Born in '24 she'd have to have joined in '44, as my mother did, indeed, on her birthday. She taught sailors how to shoot 20mm anti-aircraft guns. Tough broad. But cute, eh?
