I am just me a regular guy that loves the University Of Utah Utes, The Pittsburgh Steelers and The Saint Louis Cardinals. Redheaded women are my kryptonite.
Rodney Dangerfield spent decades telling America that he got “no respect.” At 72, after a lifetime of turning rejection, disappointment, and failed relationships into comedy, he married Joan Child, the Santa Monica florist who had spent ten years seeing the gentle man behind the famous red tie.
Their story began in 1983. Rodney walked into her flower shop and opened with a line so unusual it sounded like one of his own jokes. Joan recognized him immediately.
She had watched him on television as a teenager, and now the comedian she remembered from “The Tonight Show” was standing right in front of her. Rodney asked what kind of drugs she liked.
Joan, raised in a conservative Utah Mormon family, innocently replied, “Antibiotics, I guess.” Rodney was fascinated. He kept returning to the shop, often while she arranged flowers, until those visits became something they both looked forward to.
Years later, Joan remembered that first moment with deep affection. To her, it felt like love at first sight. She saw a fascinating man with unforgettable blue eyes and a warmth that made her smile. Rodney was already a famous comedian, but their relationship moved slowly.
They dated on and off for nearly ten years. He was about three decades older, lived an unusual comedian’s lifestyle, and carried the history of a difficult first marriage. But Joan saw something others missed.
She waited for his phone calls. She looked forward to his visits. She loved the private humor that existed when no audience was around. The world knew the man who joked about being unwanted. Joan knew the man who wanted to be understood. She later described him as the funniest person she had ever known, but also as intelligent, caring, and deeply tender.
That difference mattered. Because at home, Rodney did not have to perform rejection. On December 26, 1993, their long courtship suddenly became a marriage. Rodney and Joan went to Las Vegas, found a wedding chapel, and said their vows. He was 72 years old.
The comedian who had spent decades turning loneliness and marriage troubles into jokes had finally entered a different chapter. Even after marriage, Rodney never stopped writing comedy. Joan became his favorite audience.
He tested jokes on her, teased about married life, and made her laugh. She understood something important. Humor was not just his career. It was the way he survived pain, depression, aging, and memories from a childhood where affection was often hard to find.
Their life together was unconventional. Rodney kept comedian hours, sometimes staying awake until the early morning. Joan managed much of their daily life and stayed beside him as his health declined.
When he underwent brain surgery in 2003, she never left his side. She even joked that she sometimes needed an older husband because keeping up with Rodney was exhausting. Then came 2004. Rodney faced serious heart problems and underwent valve replacement surgery.
Complications followed, including a stroke, infections, and other medical issues. He slipped into a coma. Joan stayed close. The florist who once watched him walk into her shop was now waiting for any sign that he was still there.
Eventually, Rodney opened his eyes. Joan remembered the moment. He kissed her, squeezed her hand, and smiled at his doctors. Rodney Dangerfield died on October 5, 2004, at 82.
He left behind decades of laughter, nearly eleven years of marriage, and a love that lasted far beyond the jokes. The man who spent his life asking for respect finally found someone who gave it to him every day. ❤️
