🤯 How it got started in just one .socialmedia slide.

1️⃣ Own your influence.
2️⃣ Monetize your audience.
3️⃣ Build your legacy.

Every creator today builds on rented land. The audience, the reach, the revenue : all of it lives inside #socialmedia platforms you don't control, under rules you didn't write, on algorithms that can change overnight.

.socialmedia exists to change the ownership and follow question. Not another platform. A name and followers on the internet that belongs to the brand or the creator and travels with them wherever they go.

We submitted the .socialmedia application to ICANN this month.

Now the real work begins. Let's see the #revealday

More info: https://t.co/WuMailMJBq

[Cyril Frémont @FremontCyril]

On August 12, we filed our application with #ICANN for .socialmedia, a new top-level #domain as part of the 2026 round.

The idea is simple. Today your online identity is scattered: one handle on #Instagram, another on #TikTok, a third on YouTube, a link-in-bio page on top of it all.

Nobody owns the address that ties it together.

.socialmedia is meant to fix that:
→ yourname.socialmedia, one memorable address that gathers every profile you run
→ Built for creators, brands, public figures, and communities
→ Paired with my.socialmedia, a platform to connect all your social links to your domain

A domain name is the one piece of your online identity no platform can take away. We think social media deserves its own.

The road ahead is long: ICANN evaluation takes time, and nothing is guaranteed. But the application is in, and we're building.

❤️‍🔥 On 12 August 2026, ICANN closed its first general window for new top-level domains since 2012. We filed for .socialmedia.

Why this string:

→ It explains itself. Everyone already knows what "social media" means.

→ It names a behaviour, not a trend: roughly 5.4 billion people use social media today.

→ It serves two kinds of registrant without them colliding: people and creators, and brands and professionals.

→ The open social protocols are already converging on domain names as identity.

What a .socialmedia name would give its owner: one address that outlives every platform, your actual name rather than a compromise, ownership in the legal sense, and email on your own name.

It also comes with my.socialmedia, a hub you build from one prompt, with Super Follow: a follow kept at your address, not inside somebody's app.

We are not a first-time applicant. We have run the .Best registry since 2018.

And to be clear about where things stand: evaluation is measured in years, not weeks. We will not guess a launch date. We will publish our progress as it happens.

📱 We applied for creating the new .socialmedia #internet extension : ~6.8 platforms the average user touches every month. One person/brand, seven identities, none of them portable.

Indeed, ask most people online where their audience lives, and they'll name a platform. Ask them what they own, and it gets uncomfortable. Same for brands, creators, and 5.4B users using social media worldwide in 2026.

The same person is @jdupont on one network, @j_dupont on another, @jeandupont.official on a third, and nothing at all on the fourth because someone else got there first. Seven identities, seven landlords, none of them portable.

🗓️ On 12 August we filed our application for .socialmedia in the ICANN 2026 round the first general window since 2012.

💡 The idea is simple: a domain is the only identifier on the internet an individual can actually hold. Registered in your name, renewable on your terms, movable between providers, independent of any single app. It's the closest thing the network has to a deed.

📲 What was missing wasn't the technology : it was a namespace that says, in the language people already use, what the thing is for.

1️⃣ One address that outlives every platform. A name that survives being said out loud on a podcast. Your actual name, available at standard price, for a window that doesn't reopen.

I'd rather be straight about the rest: eleven characters is long, evaluation takes months, and nobody knows the delegation date yet. We wrote all of that down too.

Why this string, what it's worth, and the objections we get asked most:

All the Best.

🤩🤩🤩 .Best just crossed 80,000 #domains. 2 months ago, we passed 60,000. One month ago, 70,000. Today, 80,000 #domainnames. But why now ?

Basically, that’s roughly 10,000+ new domains increase every month, a pace our .Best registry has never seen before. A few things I take from it:

1. When you ask an #AI “what’s the best…?”, what does it cite?

Meltwater analyzed 9.5 million AI citations (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot…) across 16 B2B categories. The result: LinkedIn is the #2 most-cited source, right behind YouTube.

But more importantly, the content that gets picked up isn’t random.

It’s structured:

→ “Best X” lists at 54% of citations
→ side-by-side comparisons
→ “How to choose” guides
→ clear headings, named entities, hard numbers

In other words: AI cites whoever helps people choose and find the best.

That’s where .best comes in.

An address like https://t.co/WyIQuW1sJn, https://t.co/z4F6fENvLd or https://t.co/8od6NkvhvY announces its content in the name itself: a comparison, a ranking, a selection. The user’s intent, the format AI prefers, and the domain name all say the same thing.

Let’s be clear: the extension doesn’t earn the citation. The content does. But a dedicated comparison site, with clear criteria, real data and the year in the title, on an address that says exactly what it is? That’s the right packaging for the right format.

Moreover :

2. Meaning beats length. It's 2026, people don’t want another generic, neither a not descriptive extension. They want a premium descriptive name that says something: https://t.co/FLIHj0sHzO, https://t.co/HpVNwdQt1t ... A claim, not just an address.

3. Distribution matters. None of this happens without our amazing registrar partners worldwide, including @GoDaddy , @namesilo , @Namecheap @, @spaceship , @gandi_net , @Dynadot , @Porkbun , @OVHcloud , @Netim_fr , @squarespace , ... and many more. Thank you. You guys are the Best!

4. #AI is changing how names are found. As answers move from search results to LLMs, a clear, memorable, meaningful domain becomes a signal, not a detail.

That’s exactly what we’re building at https://t.co/toOWn69ESD.

Now 80K live domains, and we’re just getting started.

To everyone who chose .best: thank you. You’re the reason this works.

Tell me what would you build on a .best #domain in comment?
