Royal Mail has announced plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs by the end of 2027.

When billionaire Daniel Křetínský’s takeover was approved in December 2024, the government presented the deal as one that would help “secure jobs”, while Jonathan Reynolds said: “We have negotiated something that secures the long-term future of Royal Mail.”

Less than two years later, thousands of jobs are set to disappear.

Britain has spent decades selling off essential national infrastructure on the promise that private ownership would make it leaner, cheaper and better. Too often the result has been the opposite: jobs cut, services hollowed out, prices pushed up and private owners protected, while the public is left carrying the risk when the model fails. Royal Mail is starting to look like another example of the same failed experiment.
