In South Africa, sport is culture.
We don’t just watch.
We argue.
We predict.
And more often now — we put money behind our opinions.
Not for profit.
For pride.
More people are reaching breaking point.
4,600 treated for gambling addiction last year (up from 2,600).
At the same time, SA is proposing a 20% tax on online gambling profits.
Question is:
A growing trend in SA’s workforce:
40% of employed individuals gamble regularly — often to manage short-term financial gaps.
It’s more common among younger, lower-income workers.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Groceries or a chance to make more?
South Africans are reportedly diverting food budgets into online gambling.
Online activity now makes up 60%+ of spend.
A worrying signal in South Africa.
R1.5 trillion was wagered in 2024/25.
Betting now makes up 70% of gambling revenue.
At the same time, the Responsible Gambling Programme reports a 55% rise in people seeking help.
What does this mean for youth exposure?
The conversation is getting bigger.
