No1. Bet Low was #BOTD1924 in Gourock. From 1945 Glasgow was her home. Teacher training failed to inspire and Bet began working for Unity Theatre designing sets. She also sketched street scenes in central Glasgow. This small self portrait dates to 1952.

No51. In 2001 @UofGlasgow celebrated the 550th anniversary of its foundation. Bet sent two works to their fundraising art auction. During her career Bet generously sent artworks to a number of fundraising art auctions organised by various Scottish charities.

No 50. In 1999 @GlasgowArtClub celebrated Bet’s award of Doctor of Letters from @UofGlasgow with a formal dinner and an exhibition of around 70 of Bet’s artworks. The exhibition included Still Life Flowing Sea dating to around 1988.

No49. In 1999 Bet was awarded the honorary title of Doctor of Letters by @UofGlasgow. This award was for her contribution to the arts in Glasgow. There was a formal ceremony at Bute Hall at Glasgow University and recipients wore academic gowns.

No48. In 1995 Bet received the Mayfest Paper Boat Award for her exhibition Land & Sea @BillcliffeArt and her 50 year long career. The charcoal drawing Cherry Tomatoes and Jug of Parsley was included in this exhibition.

No47. Bet was interviewed in 1991 for the STV series Talking Pictures. It was broadcast in June when Bet was holding an exhibition in Glasgow of her Orkney landscapes, alongside two other women artists who were also inspired by Orkney.

No46. Exhibition celebrating 21 years of Compass Gallery shown @GlasgowTramway May-June 1990. Compass succeeded Bet’s New Charing Cross Gallery. This was the year that Glasgow also celebrated its accolade as European City of Culture.

No45. Bet was elected an Associate of @RoyalScotAcad in 1988. In 2005 Associate Membership was abolished and Bet submitted Green Place for inclusion in the Academy’s collection and was elevated to full Academician status.

No44. Bet believed her Orkney works never looked better than @PierArtsCentre where the Third Eye Centre’s exhibition toured Nov 1986. The Pier will celebrate Bet’s work again when her Centenary @GSofA organised exhibition tours 1 March-31 May 2025 #Orkney.

In 1985 the Third Eye Centre, now @CCA_Glasgow, held a retrospective exhibition of Bet’s work covering 40 years organised by Cordelia Oliver. It toured to Dumfries, Perth and Stromness. Dried Flowers and Grasses was the image on the private view card.

No42. The Bet Low Trust formed in 1994 and provides an award at the Paisley Art Institute exhibition. The Trust has loaned works by Bet and also her son Ewan Macdonald to the celebratory Bet Low Centenary exhibition at the Lillie Art Gallery until 7 Nov.

No41. Bet’s only screenprint Lennox Woods, north of Glasgow, produced in 1984 edition of 60 prints @GlasPrintStudio. Bet’s watercolour of the subject was used as the reference. The screenprint was printed in an array of 10 colours.
