Tinubu approved a pay rise for military personnel, and Nigerians are celebrating. The increase is well deserved, but it is not good enough. In fact, it is insulting when compared with the scale of the increases and benefits given to those Tinubu sees as friends, colleagues and members of his political circle.

Overthinkers like us have already started linking the timing to the election, and rightly so.

From the beginning of Tinubu’s administration, billions were approved for bulletproof vehicles and renovations of residential quarters for the president, his wife and other senior officials. More than 460 federal lawmakers received costly SUVs. Judicial officers later received a 300% increase in remuneration, while some judges have since been provided with fully furnished official residences.

Yet the military personnel who put their lives on the line to protect the country are only now being granted increases ranging from 30% to 80%. Even the celebrated 80% applies only to personnel from private to staff sergeant. Those from warrant officer to colonel get 50%, while officers above colonel get 30%.

To the military personnel who may mistake this insulting increase for a personal favour from Tinubu and then help rig him back into power, ask yourselves: Why is the “strongest land military in the world” being defeated on land by untrained bandits? Why did Tinubu wait until just a few days before the start of the campaign to increase your salaries? And finally, after helping to protect the rigging that returns him to office for a second and final term, what price will you pay for this increase?

You are being used, and I do not think many of you can see it. Like every user, Tinubu will dump you the moment he is done with you.

Pheasant hunting involves shooting birds out of the sky. After the birds fall into the bushes, your retriever dog rushes to find the downed bird, brings it back to you, and receives a small treat in return.

I have often wondered why the dogs don't simply eat the birds instead of retrieving them for a small reward.

It's a matter of conditioning.

The dogs have been trained to give up something bigger—a fresh bird—for something smaller, a treat.

In 234, students celebrate receiving alerts about loans for their university education from elected leaders who sit on vast oil wealth. These students have been conditioned to exchange something significant for something small.

Similarly, those who accept bags of rice in place of a functional Social Security system have been conditioned to accept a small treat in return for something much larger.

Ultimately, there are those who sell their votes. Your vote is incredibly valuable, and wealthy politicians plead with you to sell it to them, which you do. You have been conditioned to take a small reward in exchange for something much more significant.

It should begin with birth registry!

1. Every child in the region MUST be captured in birth registry.

2. Once they are captured, create a digital database of EVERY child in the region according. This should contain their DoB, PoB, town/city, and the schools within their catchment area.

3. Every school should have access to register their pupils/students in this database. Attendance to school should be clocked in either monthly or weekly.

4. The database should be programmed to flag students who:
- have no registered school against their profile
- have no attendance records for 2 or 3 consecutive weeks/months.

5. Flagged students should be followed up by sending notice to local authorities and schools within catchment area. Parents of said students should be contacted by the local authorities to ascertain the cause of absenteeism or nonenrolment.

6. Students database should also contain their school transcripts. Information about their academic records, sports participation and talents, etc. Universities in the region should not only admit students based on WAEC and JAMB alone but also consider sports performance, talents as part of school achievements.

This means sports development should be considered as equally important as academic achievements. Schools in the region should compete in ALL sporting events annually: football, tennis, chess, basketball, acting, athletics, etc. This should be taken as seriously as academics.

Competitions like:

Eastern High School League
Eastern Tennis Championships
Eastern College Division Football
Eastern Conference of Volleyball

And so on.

To make school worthwhile, we need to think beyond books and learning alone. Need to create a wholistic environment that incorporates primary, secondary and tertiary institutions into one continuous, interlinked journey.

We need to reduce curriculum content of unnecessary learning like drawing spiders and cockroaches and include skills and physical development like sports and business, and crafts.

Special schools should be created for the academically gifted. The rest of the students should follow a path that teaches sound reasoning, good practice, good education, human rights and governance, while majoring in economically relevant areas like mining and refining, trade and investment, sports, etc.
