I have zero despair about the Pope Leo XIV.

I refuse to be a commentator about whatever direction he has yet to lead Christ’s Holy Church.

I refuse to have anything less than hope.

Anything less than joy.

“Professional” Catholics can deliberate and speculate if they so choose to.

But a pope that is a truly holy man, a man who follows Christ with his whole heart, will always confound the world’s categories.

He won’t be left or right.

He won’t play for your team.

He’ll defend the truths of the Church with the force of a warrior, and then go kneel at the feet of the poor like a servant.

He’ll speak with absolute clarity on marriage, abortion, and salvation, and then wash the feet of inmates, visit the sick, and speak tenderly to the fallen.

If you try to fit that man into the American political spectrum, you will break your brain.

And worse, you will miss the point entirely.

Christ wasn’t a politician.

He didn’t come to take sides. He came to take over.

A faithful pope isn’t “moderate” because he lands in the middle.

He’s Catholic because he holds fast to all that the Church teaches, without compromise and without cruelty.

God works through the weakest of all of us.
