@FrannieBlock asks: Are American teachers’ unions really just political machines?
A new report out today accuses both the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association of spending tens of millions of dollars on electing Democratic political candidates, and prioritizing politicking over the needs of their union members.
The report found that of the NEA’s $450 million annual disbursement budget from fiscal year 2025, less than $46 million, or 10 percent, was spent on activities directly representing the union’s constituents.
“You read a stat like that,” said Tova Plaut, a New York City teacher and a member of both the NEA and AFT, “and you start to wonder, Where is all that money going?”
The NEA did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

"New York City spends roughly $37 billion/year to educate about 850,000 kids. That's over $42,000 per child per year. And the results are abysmal.
Two-thirds of fourth graders can't do math properly and almost three-quarters can't read at grade level...
...What we can do, Mr. Mayor, is tell every mom in NYC that the $42,000 currently spent on that terrible education is going to be her money."
Jeff Yass, one of the 2026 Alexander Hamilton Award honorees, on how we can solve NYC's education crisis through school choice.
"Modern schooling is systematically terrible at forming well-adjusted, curious, intellectually creative, entrepreneurial adults.
Schools, even much better schools, cannot solve this.
Here's the truth: Nobody loves your kids as much as you do."

Randi Weingarten is on an extended publicity tour. Her book came out last September, but she’s still hawking it as if it were fresh off the presses.
She likes to portray herself as a champion for public education.
But in truth she is only a creature of her union, @NicXTempore writes. She represents its interests, its fixations, its obsessions. And when those don’t align with the actual work of teaching children, the results are ugly.

“The ESA program is already changing lives, mine, my siblings’, and countless others across Iowa. It is expanding access, empowering families, and making it possible for more students to reach their full potential.”
This is why school choice matters! ⬇️

State Treasurer Larry Pack, who serves as Chairman of the Hope Scholarship Board, today announced that more than 20,000 students have applied for full funding of the Hope Scholarship Program for the 2026-2027 academic year. This milestone comes after Treasurer Pack announced in March that all West Virginia children in grades K-12 are now eligible to apply for the program.

I can remember as a child during the hours from Noon to 3 PM on Good Friday, there would be an aura of silence, reverence, and penance. Even if we are not able to get to the sacred liturgy at that time, we still try to keep some awe during the “Tre Ore,” those three hours. @thegnewsroom

.@EDSecMcMahon on the Education Freedom Tax Credit: This absolutely is a win-win. Private citizens can donate money into these scholarship-granting organizations, which can then award scholarships to parents who want to move their child out of failing schools.
