South Yorkshire's buses are coming into public control.
And the public are demanding passengers and workers, not just politicians, have a seat at the table.

About 50 at Better Buses rally today as South Yorkshire starts franchising process. Everyone clear that we want proper conditions for bus workers to have a voice under franchising. Nice to see Martin Mayer driving bus from franchising bus stop to public ownership stop.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 It's official — South Yorkshire just became the latest area to re-regulate local bus services.
Franchising brings more decisions under public control.
But we need full public ownership too!
A decision on whether South Yorkshire's buses should be brought back under public control will be announced later. It's after Mayor @olivercoppard held one of the biggest franchising consultation exercises ever undertaken in this country. Over 12-weeks 7600 people had their say.
We're outside the South Yorkshire Mayoral Board.
We're here to celebrate the move to bus franchising...
...and to call for us to reach the next stop — full public ownership.
Tomorrow, we're likely to see the region's Mayor make South Yorkshire the 5th area to re-regulate its buses.
Thousands of you campaigned to make this happen.
Join us at 10am tomorrow to celebrate! https://t.co/uHeJxRYCgI
The head of the private bus company 'confederation' dismisses any responsibility for privatisation in our awful bus system.
Thankfully, we only have to look at areas with public control and ownership to see they perform better.

We have been informed that all First buses in #Sheffield and #Rotherham have been suspended at the moment, also Stagecoach Rotherham have suspended their services, as soon as we have any updates then we will let you know.
The workers who clean, shunt, and refuel First buses in Sheffield are bing mistreated, underpaid, and put at risk.
Please sign this petition to support their call for fair pay and conditions.https://t.co/2U4gxZohER
A great turnout at @SadaccaWicker for our workshop on the @SouthYorksMCA consultation on bus franchising.
People are hungry for change.
But they want improvements on the system in London:
- public ownership, like on our tram.
- a vote over services for workers and passengers.
“Consultations can be dull, long, and confusing – but we want to get as many people taking part as possible”
A free workshop this weekend hopes to get more people involved in the campaign to improve Sheffield’s dire bus network ⬇️

Every other country in Europe uses some form of regulation akin to franchising.
London's failures aren't necessary — we should head these calls and fight to avoid them.
Bus franchising isn't a panacea — it wrestles back a degree of strategic control (and some of the profits) from privatisation.
We have a duty push for it to deliver a better deal for workers in South Yorkshire than it has in London.
That starts in the current consultation... 🧵
@SamMGreg@nowthenmag@BetterBusesSY The article reflects the experience of bus drivers and other transport workers, which suggests franchising is just as bad as what we have now.
...but ultimately we must build power so greater strategic control isn't hoarded at the Mayoral or council leader level.
We need to give power over services to workers and passengers.
We'll build pressure on the Mayor to deliver a system of TRUE public control.
People of South Yorkshire - do you want a better, cheaper, publicly run #bus network? 🚌
You can have your say this Saturday at a free workshop in #Sheffield. 📢
