They claimed that Charlie "appealed to the worst of us," and preyed on the fears of "impressionable youth." India: Multiple world leaders have reportedly fallen ill after attending the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the gala dinner and returned to China early, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also had to depart India early due to an unspecified illness. His Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, also fell ill at the same time, as has been confirmed by the South African government.
Analyst Comment: Right now, it's not clear as to if the illnesses are the result of malign action, or just the natural reaction to being in India. Multiple leaders from separate countries falling ill at around the same time is a big clue, but Chinese sources are speculating that President Xi might have had a stroke. At the moment, there is nothing confirming this as Xi's personal life tends to be extremely private, and there has been no official confirmation regarding why he departed the BRICS summit early.
Saudi Arabia: Repair work up and down the East-West Pipeline continues, along with repairs at Yanbu. Saudi forces have also requested air defenses from various European nations, as the United States has declined to become involved in defending their refineries.

Washington D.C. - Concerns continue to mount regarding the status of Senator Mitch McConnell. Yesterday, he was transported to the Capitol to vote on an agricultural spending bill, and footage of him continues to indicate that he is very visibly not well or coherent. Sen. McConnell has generally been conscious, but unresponsive to verbal comments made by journalists attempting to ask him questions.

USA: Around the nation, reports of gasoline and diesel shortages are beginning to manifest, as several gas stations have announced that they are out of gas. Gas stations in North Texas, Florida, and California have all reported being out of gas as of last night.

Analyst Comment: Right now it's hard to pinpoint exactly what is causing these specific shortages. To be sure, a handful of gas stations running out of gas is not indicative of a dire and imminent nationwide shortage; based on the EIA's Weekly Status Report, last week gasoline stocks in the US were only down 4.6% from what they were last year. However the empty pumps don't lie, and right now the most likely explanation for localized gasoline shortages is a combination of logistical issues delaying shipments to individual gas stations...and panic buying which will drain a gas station much faster than normal. Due to oil execs saying gas prices are going to increase over the next few days, people are probably trying to get ahead of the curve. Since most gas stations only have a day's worth of gas (and rely on nearly daily deliveries to refill their underground tanks), it doesn't take much of an increase in demand to generate a localized shortage.

Analyst Comments: Saudi oil contracts continued to be canceled as the scale of Houthi attacks continues to expand. All oil onloading at Yanbu has been halted for at least six days, and the only other source for Saudi exports is now through smaller ports, or through Ras Tanura via the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the devastation, some Saudi officials claim that the East-West Pipeline will return to at least 50% of it's capacity within a few days, though this appears to be wishful thinking at best. At the moment, formalized force majeure declarations have not taken place, but Aramco has "deferred" deliveries of crude for the rest of the month of September, and various contracts continue to be canceled.

As it stands, Saudi Arabia is seriously in trouble and it's extremely unlikely that Saudi Arabia will be exporting any sizable amount of oil for a while. European oil traders seem rather adamant that Saudi Arabia has already canceled most of their contracts with various customers for oil deliveries, however Saudi officials assure the world that everything is fine and they will be back to full capacity soon. Saudi sources have claimed that the SUMED pipeline (with it's capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day) can be used as a partial-backup to the East-West Pipeline being down. However there is one problem with this plan...geography. The SUMED pipeline is not in Saudi Arabia, it's in Egypt. And the only way that the Saudis can use this pipeline, is to load oil at Yanbu, sail it on ships across the Red Sea, and deposit the crude in Egypt to be sent down the pipeline. The single point of failure for this "backup" pipeline is the same point of failure for the East-West Pipeline...Yanbu. Which is currently offline due to Houthi strikes.

Whatever the truth is regarding exactly how much oil is able to exit the Middle East, it will be discovered rather quickly as crude cannot be conjured up out of thin air, and at some point the sheer lack of volume will have to be acknowledged.

Within the homeland, the United States has begun more serious mitigation efforts due to the Saudis being offline for presumably a long time. The Department of Transportation has issued a 90-day waiver for truckers carrying fuel, easing Hours-of-Service (HOS) regulations to allow truckers to drive more hours in a 24 hour period. The White House is also still considering an export ban on diesel, in order to ease rising costs in the United States. If this were to be enacted, domestic prices would probably dip, but the shock to the system could result in unintended consequences in the long term.

How to Identify an Op: A Primer

Some people say the anti-AI campaign is COVID 2.0: an op that uses the rhetoric and tactics of COVID hysteria for the same goal. Other people say they're nothing alike. Who's right?

Let's test it! Let's make some predictions and then, at the end of the week, we can check how the hypothesis is holding up.

One way of understanding how things happen in Washington DC is by dividing up the town into politics (Congress and lobbies), policy (agencies and think tanks), and media (journalists and comms shops). An op works by bouncing these three off each other. Experts get quoted by journalists who get cited by politicians who are hosted by those experts' organizations to roll out legislation that gets covered by journalists with validating quotes from the experts, and so on. There are various tricks - administration spox can be used instead of elected officials to launder messaging, reporters can use unbaked leaked memos instead of expert analysis, a background quote can be used to get a story across the finish line, etc. - but this mapping is good enough for our purposes.

It's an enormously significant fact about American politics that by the early 2010s the left had developed so much infrastructure that it started running campaigns in which everyone involved was funded by the same small ecosystem of donors. Health care and Iran are the canonical examples from Obama 1 and Obama 2, respectively. By the beginning of the Trump administration they could flip a switch, metaphorically but also to some extent literally, and make anything real: Russiagate, net neutrality repeal will literally kill people, disinformation, voter suppression, kids in cages, Kavanaugh, moving the embassy to Jerusalem will create endless Middle East wars, Trump ally is burning down the Amazon, and eventually COVID and BLM to paralyze Republican governance and crash the economy in the year before the election. It's 2026, and the right still hasn't built what the left already had during Obama.

So.

The claim is that the anti-AI panic is COVID 2.0, in which the left is running an op with the rhetoric and tactics of COVID hysteria to run out the clock on Republicans through the election. If that claim is right, you'd expect to see the following getting bounced between elected Democrats, politicized experts, and journalists:

- rhetoric about "safety" amplified by journalists, as the basis for expanding government control and shutting down an ever-increasing list of activities.

- recommendations for an initial "pause," followed by expert analysis saying it should be extended as long as politically useful to Democrats.

- calls for Democrats to paralyze Congress and block legislation, with the pretext being that "the threat posed by AI is the only thing Congress should be focused on right now."

If the anti-AI panic is not COVID 2.0, then you wouldn't expect to see those things. Easy enough to test.

I have conducted an audit of Anthropic's finances.

What I have found is so shocking that I am calling for a Congressional investigation.

Anthropic is not just seeking regulatory capture.

It has built a regulatory capture machine that cannot be turned off.

Structural financial incentives make it impossible for Anthropic -- I call it the Anthropic Network -- to turn off its own AI doom cycle.

It starts with METR.

Dario Amodei proposes "third-party evaluators" to assess the risk of Anthropic's models.

He proposes METR for this purpose.

But METR is financially dependent on the Anthropic's success -- specifically, on the explosive growth of more than $7 billion dollars in Anthropic stock.

Dustin Moskovitz invested this stock into Good Ventures Foundation, where it represents the majority of that organization's portfolio.

And GVF is the overwhelming funder of the entire Anthropic Network ecosystem.

This stock was worth $500 million early last year.

It is worth more than $7.7 billion just ~16 months later.

METR -- and all of those building a career its parent organizations -- cannot afford to disrupt that growth.

Because if Anthropic goes under, many of the organizations that fund METR go under as well.

But if Anthropic succeeds, METR and its parent organizations become more richly financed to regulate AI -- something those at METR want very much.

The "third-party evaluator" is not "third-party" at all.

The evaluator is on Anthropic's payroll.

If this were the end of it, that's bad.

But that isn't all.

The same organizations that fund METR also fund the many organizations, such as the Tarbell Center, that promote AI Doom.

The Tarbell Center publishes AI Doom articles in The Verge, Science, LA Times, The Dispatch, TIME, and others.

They are selling the problem, and then selling the solution to the problem -- from the same money pile: Anthropic's.

All of these organizations are financially dependent on the same exploding $7 billion money pile.

As Anthropic grows more and more powerful, its AI Doom Machine grows better and better financed -- louder and louder.

Meanwhile, the regulatory regime seeded in METR grows larger to solve the increasingly loud -- now hysterical -- problem of AI Doom that the Anthropic Network itself created.

From this standpoint, as Anthropic becomes more powerful, AI might be getting scarier, sure -- but the positive feedback loop also becomes more deafening -- independent of objective facts.

This itself is an objective fact.

The deafening AI Doom is part of an business model, that, as it expands, so too does the AI Doom messaging -- there is simply more money to do it.

But the problem also goes in the other direction:

If Anthropic dies, the Regulatory Regime and the AI Doom Machine are crippled or die.

Neither METR nor Tarbell nor the other organizations in the Anthropic Network can allow that to happen.

Hence, neither METR or the AI Doom Machine can be trusted to provide independent assessments of Anthropic's models or AI more broadly.

They simply are not organizations independent of Anthropic.

And Anthropic cannot detach itself from METR or Tarbell or countless other safety orgs (not shown here), either, because they drive hype for the models and the possibility of eventual regulatory capture, and Anthropic will not give that up willingly.

What's more, the people at all of these organizations are all the same ecosystem, the same community. They just shuffle between organizations.

The Anthropic Network is therefore, so long as it is successful, locked into a self-amplifying feedback loop inside an ideological monoculture.

And that feedback loop is winning.

That's what Jacob Coxon is.

China is keeping messaging tight. That is why optimism for AI is so high in China.

America has Anthropic: a massive company pushing anti-AI propaganda at a state level.

Anthropic will either create hysteria until American AI slows down and China wins, or it will create fractures throughout American society with severe political consequences.

Ironically, because of the structural financial incentives underpinning the Anthropic Network, it has become the same kind of self-amplifying virus that it fantasizes AI to become in the future -- while hiding its tracks just as carefully.

It is the mirror of the same AI virus that it hypothesizes to consume America.

Anthropic's business model, models itself after the very thing it claims to fear.

Except Anthropic's ideology infects humans, not computers.

Congress must investigate.

You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement.

I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible.

But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier.

Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want.

Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well.

So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it.

If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.
