I'm so excited to be able to share the news that I've been appointed to a permanent post at Cardiff University. Thrilled that I get to continue working with such a great group of philosophers here, and that Cardiff University will be my intellectual home for the foreseeable ❤️
We are very pleased to announce that Dr Becky Millar has been appointed as a full-time Lecturer on a permanent contract.

"What is new is a theme running throughout our degrees: the usefulness of philosophising in working together to address problems that we face collectively as organisations and as a society."

I'm very happy to share my article 'Can animals grieve?', which has just been published open access in @ErgoEditors. I argue that—contra assumptions present in various philosophical accounts of grief—many non-human animals can, and do, grieve.

Had a great time speaking about smell and interpersonal experience for the PPIG talk series at @UoE_Philosophy yesterday! Lovely to be back where I did my MSc & PhD, where so many of my philosophical interests formed. Thanks for having me, & to @jelliedsours for chairing! 💙
A wee paper about sensorimotor theory & mechanism by @BexMillar and me is OUT NOW in @philosophicalps. Continuing my broader ambition of late: resolving unnecessary antagonism around representation, enactivism & mechanism. Check it out!

Happy start of term everyone!

Berislav Marušić will be kicking us off on Wednesday with his talk on Embodied Radical Freedom.
It's a year since we published our special issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies, on 'Understanding Grief'. It's a wide-ranging collection, covering pain, memory, attention, music, theology, chatbots, grief over illness and more: https://t.co/g6WBbENMeZ
We provide an account of why the sense of smell is actually especially well placed to allow for a sense of closeness with the dead, & discuss some implications of this for philosophical accounts of interpersonal experience. (3/3)
Happy to share this newly published article in Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, co-authored with Louise Richardson as part of @GriefYork, which explores an important role for the sense of smell in grief. (1/3)

Many bereaved people report smelling the clothing, bedding, & possessions of their loved one to feel a sense of closeness & continuing connection with them. However, this capacity may seem at odds with various assumptions about smell's limitations and relative unimportance. (2/3)
New paper co-authored with Louise Richardson, which combines our interests in the philosophy of grief and the philosophy of smell! You can check out the preprint on https://t.co/DwpxODlUlY.
Project members @BexMillar & Louise Richardson have had an article titled 'Grief, smell, & the olfactory air of a person' accepted by Pacific Philosophical Quarterly. It considers how olfaction can enable continuing bonds with the dead. Pre-print below: https://t.co/ldu1xUEiBu
