@CNN has a fascinating story about a little-known Ethiopian crop that could become the next billion-dollar agricultural story.
Enset has been cultivated in Ethiopia for centuries. Around 60 plants can provide enough food to sustain a family of five for a year. It can survive drought, resist disease, and keep growing for years without being replanted.
So why is it barely known outside Ethiopia?
That question caught the attention of James Borrell, a conservation biologist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He believes enset could potentially be grown across much larger parts of Africa and become increasingly important as climate change makes farming more difficult.
Kew even managed to grow enset to maturity in London and saw it flower in 2023.
And Borrell makes a fascinating point. Rice, wheat, maize and potatoes became global giants partly because of history and circumstance. There is nothing inevitable about which crop becomes the next major one.
Could enset be one of those overlooked opportunities?
Read the CNN story. It is a fascinating glimpse at a crop from Ethiopia that could have a much bigger future. https://t.co/KMVlcqGYxO

Together with @IsmailOguelleh and @AlikoDangote, to day we announce a major strategic investment connecting Damerjog in Djibouti to Dewele in Ethiopia through a new refined petroleum products pipeline, supported by storage terminals at both ends.
The project will be developed through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and the Dangote Group. This landmark infrastructure will reduce logistics costs and delays, strengthen energy security, and enhance the efficiency and resilience of the Ethiopia–Djibouti corridor.
More than a pipeline, this is an investment in future growth, regional integration and a more secure shared economic future—with African investment at its center.
