Tell me again why the U.S. keeps threatening penalties on India? The whole reason the U.S. had NOT discouraged India's Russia purchases in the first place was because of supply and stability in the global market, i.e., the exact justification for THIS diesel-related general license that the United States is now giving to itself. But ever since the first threat to layer an additional 25% on top of the initial 25% base tariff, and now with the Graham bill enshrined into law, that "global supply" rationale dropped away as the U.S. has threatened India over Russia-related purchases. So how is this supposed to look to folks in Delhi?
American economy is very poor, they have borrowed so much that even paying interest on that is beyond capabilities of any american.
What we are seeing @elonmusk & #Trump are doing is basically begging to sell in #India. Because Indians have much higher real purchasing power.

@elonmusk Indians use American Digital assets as long as they are free (whatsapp/facebook/insta/x/google/youtube/Amazon) even though people can afford but there are very few who will pay for digital assets.
Too much Ads & it will kill product. Make it paid it will kill it too.

@elonmusk American #Ai Investment are in jeopardy they are very highly valued if they want to catch they will have to devalue dollar to pay it off. Other issue is with the market, there market is struggling to pay on there own they need other market (India) which have huge purchasing power
First in my bloodline to see a trillionaire beg like this.
Elon Musk’s sneer at India’s policymaking raises a fundamental question: since when did a foreign billionaire acquire the authority to lecture a sovereign nation on how it should regulate its strategic sectors?
Starlink is a business, not a geopolitical entitlement. India’s spectrum policy must be determined by national security, competition, and public interest not by the commercial impatience of the world’s richest men.
The deeper concern is the political context. Musk once positioned himself against the so-called Deep State through DOGE. Today, his own rhetoric invites an uncomfortable question: are global corporate interests increasingly willing to undermine governments that refuse to bend to them?
Is this merely a billionaire’s ego, a commercial dispute, or part of a broader attempt to weaken a government that insists on strategic autonomy? There is no evidence to declare a coordinated plot to unseat Modi but neither should India ignore attempts to turn commercial leverage into political pressure.
India is not a banana republic. Modi is not answerable to Musk, and Bharat’s sovereignty is not up for auction.
The world must understand one thing: India welcomes investment, not intimidation; competition, not coercion; partnership, not patronage.
No billionaire, no corporation, no so-called global deep state gets to decide India’s future. That right belongs to 1.4 billion Indians.
@elonmusk You are burning the bridges, onthing Indians hate is bully. Good people are not vocal but as time goes by you will realize what you have done.
Mocking people of india and our democracy will not go well.
You will see change in years which will be for greater good.
Get well !
Dear Elon @elonmusk
You hv certainly stirred up plenty of reaction with ur posts. But this needs a response from me, as did ur “Electronic Voting machines can be hacked” post from some time ago.
As someone who knows a little bit abt Telecom as someone who played a decent-ish role in building Indias wireless sector as an Entrepreneur and then as a policy maker , let me share my thoughts.
It is true that Indias Telecom was a sector beset with opaqueness and corruption for several decades - where cronies ruled under the benevolent love and the politics of ur latest fan (name not withheld - @RahulGandhi )
But under PM @narendramodi , 3 principles govern the tech (including Telecom/Internet) sector.
Open, Safe & Trusted and Accountable.
#OSTA
✅ Open - Free from any monopoly-duopoly. Free and fair competition.
✅ #SafeAndTrusted - Infra, Network , Platforms must be safe and trusted.
✅ Accountable - Every participant should be legally accountable for safety and trust.
I was a MP first and then part of PM @narendramodi jis team when this framework was developed. I have more than a little experience of fighting years of political and bureaucratic opaqueness and corruption, which shaped these principles.
so todays India is not that old crony driven India.
I am not in govt anymore and certainly dont speak for it. But it seems to me that Govt has made it clear: all three satcom licensees are at broadly the same stage of ensuring security clearance by verifying its safety and trust first, then spectrum.
Satellite IP services have many security implications. More so in a country like India which has faced years of Terror and insurgency supported by inmical state actors in our neighbourhood. From 26/11 terror attacks to recent ones in Pahalgam, satcom has been preferred comm for Terrorists. Satellite VOIP and encryption creates more challenges security wise. Not insurmountable but new capabilities and capacity hv to be built to ensure Safety and Trust.
I hv used @Starlink and I think its awesome technology - and represents a new era in mobility innovation. No doubt.
But a country has to plan for itself and its interests before every new choice. Thats what India is doing. Patience is unavoidable and in this case is a necessity.
Key disadvantages of allowing Starlink in India include:
National security risks: Foreign-controlled network limits India's ability to shut off service in sensitive border areas or ensure availability during crises. Past reports of terminals with militants or smugglers raise misuse concerns.
Data sovereignty issues: Laser links could route traffic outside Indian gateways, complicating monitoring and lawful interception.
High costs: Hardware and monthly fees likely far exceed affordable terrestrial options like Jio or Airtel, limiting rural access.
Market impact: Could disrupt local telecoms and foster over-reliance on a single US provider instead of domestic alternatives.
Rahul Gandhi’s reply to Elon Musk’s tweet today exposes two things that define Rahul Gandhi’s and the Congress ecosystem’s politics. Nothing exposes them better than this one tweet.
First, when discussions were going on last year about Starlink’s possible entry into India, the Congress party opposed it, alleging that this was being done to support businessmen close to Prime Minister Modi. They even brought in the national security angle to oppose Starlink’s entry.
And now, the same Rahul Gandhi has made a complete U-turn and is pushing for Starlink’s entry into India. He has not only reversed his party’s stand from a few months ago, but has also conveniently forgotten the national security arguments his own party had raised then.
This shows that Rahul Gandhi’s opposition is simply for the sake of opposition. When they thought the Modi government was supporting Starlink, they opposed it. Now, when they think the government is opposing it, they are supporting Starlink.
They can sway whichever way they want, as long as it is to oppose Modi. Principles, consistency and even national security can be conveniently forgotten.
Second, look at what has happened today and how history has parallels to this.
Rahul Gandhi is supporting a foreign businessman because he believes Indian businessmen are close to the Prime Minister. He seems willing to welcome a foreign businessman to challenge Indian businesses simply because he believes those businesses support Modi.
This reminds us of Jaichand. There are many such examples in Indian history where our own people sided with foreign interests to further their individual political ambitions. Every time, such choices cost the nation dearly. These divisions and betrayals contributed to centuries of foreign domination and subjugation.
Rahul Gandhi seems determined to replay the same textbook.
But this time, the consequences could extend beyond political hegemony to technological and economic dependence as well.
And for what? Just to oppose Modi?
Will you oppose India just to oppose Modi, Mr. Rahul Gandhi?
It is unfortunate that we have a Leader of Opposition like you, Mr. Rahul Gandhi.
