🇮🇳 Velammal MHS School (India) takes gold at 2025 World Schools Team Championship!

After eight exciting rounds, the 2025 World Schools Team Championship wrapped up today in Alexandria, Virginia. Set on the beautiful campus of Episcopal High School, the event brought together some of the most talented young chess players from around the world. Rising above the rest with a perfect score, Velammal MHS School from India claimed the gold medal, winning all eight of their matches.

With India continuing to make waves across all levels and formats of chess, this victory adds yet another title to the country’s growing collection. Velammal MHS is no stranger to success—former students include Grandmasters R. Praggnanandhaa and Leon Mendonca. So it came as little surprise when the team entered the final round with the top spot already secured.

BREAKING NEWS: 19-year-old IM Divya Deshmukh qualifies to FIDE Women's World Cup Finals, books her spot at the Women's Candidates Chess Tournament 2026!

Divya won a wild game against Former Women's World Champion Tan Zhongyi in Game 2 of the semifinals! The first game was drawn, so Divya knocks out Tan Zhongyi 1.5-0.5 and makes it to the finals.

The top 3 finishers of the World Cup make it to the Candidates. Divya has now secured Silver at least - so she will be playing the Women's Candidates Chess Tournament 2026! The winner of Candidates will challenge Ju Wenjun for the Women's World Champion title!

With this result, Divya also makes her first ever Grandmaster Norm! She needs 2 more norms to become India's latest Grandmaster. Or, if she wins the Women's World Cup, she will directly become a Grandmaster!

What a huge occasion for the youngster from Nagpur, Maharashtra. Big congratulations to Divya and best wishes to her for the Finals!

100 years ago, 15 delegates met during a chess tournament at Mairie de 9 arrondissement de Paris (City Council) and agreed to establish FIDE! And so, the new association was created and registered under French law. #FIDE100 ♟️ 💯

Precisely 100 years later, we are meeting once again at the same venue to commemorate and reenact this historical event. Today, FIDE invited the 15 founding federations to sign the memorandum, just like a century ago!
