MEET 23-YEAR-OLD ASMITA DEY 🇮🇳🥹

Born in a small village in Tripura, Asmita is the daughter of a bicycle mechanic who struggled every day to provide for his family.

They were so poor that they depended on ration cards just to put food on the table.

When 12-year-old Asmita left home after being selected in a talent search, her father folded his hands before her coach and made just one request:

“Sir, we’re very small people. Please help my daughter become someone.”

That one sentence became her life’s purpose.

She spent years away from home, travelling for days to compete, often without confirmed train tickets, chasing a dream that seemed impossible.

Then, heartbreak struck ❤️‍🩹

Just days before qualifying for the Commonwealth Games, her father passed away after suffering a brain stroke.

She flew home, performed his last rites, and quietly returned to training.

Today, with tears in her eyes, Asmita Dey fulfilled her late father’s dream by becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games Judo Gold Medallist. 🥇🇮🇳

He couldn’t be there to watch her stand on top of the podium.

But every step she took was for him.

Some victories are far bigger than medals.

One year since this audacity.

The victim is bedridden, disoriented, and surviving solely on support, fed through a Ryles tube and requiring round-the-clock nursing and specialized care just to stay alive.. As a family of four with only one earner, they’ve exhausted their savings and borrowed heavily to cover monthly medical bills running into lakhs. They are now crowdfunding, having received no support from the accused’s family.

Meanwhile, the accused is out on bail. The case drags on with long adjournments, and according to a post in r/jammu, the High Court has interim-stayed proceedings under Section 109 (attempt to murder), though I couldn't independently verify this.

What should have been an open-and-shut case will be dragged out for years. Once public memory fades and the family loses the spirit to fight, which they already have, the accused will walk away without consequences.

The Commonwealth Games is becoming a daily roll-call of young Indians who have emerged from unimaginable hardship & horrors to win gold.

Look at 23-year-old judoka Asmita Dey, who is now the first Indian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 48kg category.

7 months ago, she lost her father to a brain stroke. A bicycle mechanic who earned barely ₹300 a day, he raised his family in a mud house in a small village in Tripura. When a knee injury threatened Asmita’s career, he found the money to take her to Delhi for treatment.

Even as the family mourned, Asmita’s mother urged her daughter to return to training, believing that abandoning the dream would betray everything her father had sacrificed for.

She now stands on top of the Commonwealth Games podium with a gold medal around her neck.

Wanted to take a moment to thank someone who gave @SkyrootA its first real lift-off—Mukesh Bansal.

8 Years ago, we sent him a cold LinkedIn message.

He replied.

We met that very weekend.

Soon after, he became Skyroot’s first investor with a ₹10 crore cheque.

At the time, there was no space policy. No proof that we could build an orbital rocket. Immense technology risk. And every reason to say no.

Yet he looked beyond the uncertainty. He believed in our passion and saw possibility long before there was evidence.

But what stayed with me even more than the investment was the trust.

He gave us complete freedom to build, trusted us to make the right decisions, and was always there to mentor us whenever we needed him. More than capital, he helped shape our thinking with one piece of advice:

“Always do the right thing. This journey will be much longer and much harder than you imagine. Build two things with equal importance: the product and the organisation.”

This has guided us through every phase of the journey and continue to shape how we build Skyroot today.

The first cheque is never just capital. It is belief.

Every great startup needs someone willing to take that first leap of faith—when all they can really invest in is the founders’ conviction.

India needs many more such risk-takers backing ambitious deep-tech entrepreneurs long before success becomes obvious.

I am not sorry to say this, but you have to be one hell of a shitty human being to bring babies to protests when you know such protests can quickly turn volatile.

There are countless couples longing to have children, and then there are people who choose to use their own babies as props or shields during a protest. Lot of desis don’t like driving when they visit India. I have made it a point to drive instead of hiring a taxi or a driver. I have driven a few thousand KMs during this trip. Traffic sense is the worst it has ever been. The amount of blatant lawlessness, brinkmanship and utter disregard for one’s own life is mind numbing. Every other biker is scrolling on their smartphones while riding. If we enforce laws, there will probably be 10,000 fines in a 100KM stretch. I have no hope. If we can’t punish wrong-side driving, then nothing else can be punished. Enforcement, which is the first step in improving road safety is totally dead. I don’t know how we can come out of this.

Mumbai - A shocking incident occurred inside a lift of the Sheth Irene high-rise tower in Malad West, when a pet dog suddenly turned aggressive and tried to attack three young girls. CCTV footage that has now gone viral on social media, a woman entered the lift with her dog, where three girls were already present. Moments after the lift doors closed, the dog suddenly became aggressive and lunged towards the girls. The women inside the lift panicked as the dog tried to pounce on them. The woman owner was seen desperately trying to control her pet and restrain it. When the lift doors opened, one of the girls tried to rush out, but the dog again attempted to chase her. The owner managed to hold the dog back, preventing a potentially serious incident. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the episode. Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.
