We’re excited to announce the release of our latest paper in @CellRepMed 🎉
In this paper, Hollands et al. discover a subset of acute myeloid leukemia cells that they term regeneration enriched cells (RECs).
1/2
RECs do not have stemness properties but functionally catalyze leukemic regeneration in vivo post chemotherapy. This causal role provides evidence for non-canonical leukemic regrowth as a potential biomarker or therapeutic target in preventing relapse.

In today's media digest from @McMaster (@machealthsci): A fast, effective way to detect #cancer stem cells
"We are all still recovering from COVID-19, but cancer never stopped and is on the rise. We need to get back to business on this disease."
https://t.co/cuA3k8JD9S
Dr. Mickie Bhatia's team at @BBS_McMasterU showed properties of adult tumors converge with #hPSCs drug-induced differentiation in a germ layer-specific manner, thereby expanding the understanding of cancer #stemness and #pluripotency. @BhatiaProgram

They found that a higher frequency of leukemic progenitors measured by an in vitro assay, strongly correlated with overall survival, showing this way of measuring stemness is faster, cheaper and more convenient as a clinical approach to predict treatment outcomes in AML patients.
Check out the most recent publication from the Bhatia Program! In this paper, Boyd et al. including our clinical sites in Hamilton and London, conducted a comparison of stemness indicators in patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). (1/2)

@McMasterU researcher Mick Bhatia (@BhatiaProgram), from @BBS_McMasterU, has devised a new method to detect cancer stem cells in previously treated leukemia patients before the disease can recur.

Drs. John Dick and Stuart Orkin also selected Prof. Yannick Benoit from @uOttawa for his research on the epigenetic mechanisms affecting cancer stem cells in colorectal tumours.
Do you know how induced pluripotent #stemcells are created? Dr. Mick Bhatia explains how they can be used to create new therapies for human disease in this animated video. View it here ⬇️ @scilitweek#scienceliteracyweek#scilit
Today on #WorldLeukemiaDay, we're helping to shed light on leukemia during #BloodCancerAwarenessMonth! 🗓️ We are here for support, resources and education for patients and families 👉 https://t.co/5HaIOaCoSu
