The latest episode of this political comedy features a DA councillor caught playing games on their phone while the City of Johannesburg Council was in active session. Let that sink in. While tax-paying residents are actively battling catastrophic infrastructure failures, dry taps, and a city desperately crying out for decisive leadership, an elected representative found Candy Crush more gripping than the future of Jo'burg.

Council is not a taxpayer-funded daycare; it is where the lives of millions are decided. Johannesburg residents deserve focused, emotionally mature adults in those seats not distracted children treating council proceedings like a personal game room.

Before the DA rolls out its predictable public relations damage control and explains away this utter lack of composure, let’s check their track record. Lest we forget, this is the same "Devils Alliance" that collapsed its own coalition government under Mpho Phalatse because of petty tantrums and political meltdowns. Johannesburg deserves better than this ongoing, childish political theatre. It's time they grow up or step aside.

Whenever people see criticism of Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, etc. and their actions before 1994, they get very defensive.
They prefer the comforting narrative that the ANC government was handed a good deal but squandered it through corruption and incompetence.

Very few people are willing to consider that the post-1994 government received a rotten deal, one that set the country up for failure from the start.

I would go as far as to say that even if the post-1994 leadership had been completely faultless for the last 30-plus years, the structural outcome would be largely the same. This is because the old regime only agreed to the transition on the condition that the deal locked in the economic status quo and guaranteed their interests going forward.

At its core, all of this comes down to a basic truth few want to confront, that even an impeccably run ANC government, operating within the property clause, Apartheid-era debt and market constraints accepted in the early ’90s, could never have closed a wealth gap of the magnitude it was confronted with.

Yes, the settlement negotiated political power, but it never put economic wealth on the table to redistribute in the first place. So, fixating on present-day corruption allows people to ignore this structural reality because blaming bad actors offers a comforting illusion of a straightforward, easily solvable problem.

But the fact remains that even in a hypothetical world where corruption vanishes tomorrow, this won’t resolve the systemic crisis, and that’s the uncomfortable truth people are desperate to avoid.
