#Ethereum’s New Proposal: Should Validators Pay a 💰“Tax”?

The Ethereum Research Forum just dropped a hot one: Validator Redirected Revenue – validators can redirect 0–10% of staking rewards to fund public goods (dev tools, security research, infrastructure, etc.).

Numbers to chew on📊
Validators currently earn ~700k ETH/year. At a 5–10% redirect rate, that’s 50k–70k ETH (~$120M) flowing back into the ecosystem annually.

How it works❓
Validators signal their preferred contribution rate. If >50% support a rate above 0%, it becomes mandatory for everyone. Validators can also choose where the funds go, via an automated distribution contract.

The debate🎯
Pro: Fixes the “free-rider” problem – projects benefit from public infrastructure and security research but don’t pay. Validators, as long‑term ETH holders, should chip in.

Con: A validator cartel could coordinate to funnel funds to favored groups. Worse, most ETH is staked via exchanges or liquid staking protocols – it’s the delegators, not node operators, who actually eat the cost. Decision-makers ≠ payers.

Alternative: If validators are willing to give up yield, why not just cut ETH issuance instead of creating a new allocation mechanism?
