Mark 9:10 Peter, James, and John did not understand what Jesus meant by rising from the dead. It is easy for us to criticize their denseness, but perhaps if we did not know how the story ends, we would also have trouble understanding Jesus’ meaning.

Many people envision spiritual warfare as an even fight between God and Satan. They know that God will win, but they think He will just barely win.
However, that is not true. Yahweh’s strength far exceeds the power of Satan. There is zero possibility that Satan will win.

Mark 8:34 ¶ And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. (LSB)
Men want easy lives. However, pursuing God’s interests often mean living difficult, persecuted lives.

Mark 8:31 ¶ And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected ..., and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Jesus did not present a positive, uplifting, easy future for Himself. He did the opposite.

Peter is often sharply criticized for his brashness, and impetuousness. However, in this case he was the one who had the conviction to answer the question and proclaim the truth about Jesus.

Many churches present the Christian life using only glowing and positive terms. Their programs and services are designed to put people on an emotional high and make them feel good. Jesus did not present life that way. In fact He did the opposite.

Christians should not worry or be pessimistic. No matter the precariousness of any situation we ever find ourselves in, God is in control. He promised to supply our needs. The Bible is full of examples of God meeting needs in very unlikely ways.

Mark 7:23
Jesus did not merely declare all foods clean, He listed the thoughts and actions that truly make us unclean. The evil thoughts that come out of our hearts defile us, just as ingesting the wrong foods defiled the Old Testament Jews.

Some people have trouble accepting the idea that God changed the rules because the Bible says God does not change.

However it is God’s nature and character that never changes, not His rules.

Mark 7:19
Mark clearly wrote that Jesus declared all foods clean. This statement is the basis upon which we in the church age no longer consider certain foods forbidden.

The Jewish leaders proclaimed their loyalty to Yahweh. However, the reality was their heart was not in obedience to God. They had created man-made rules and pretended they were Yahweh’s rules. This happens today in evangelicalism.

Mark 6:51-52
The disciples were amazed Jesus was able to stop the storm. After everything Jesus had done, they should not have been surprised. Today, many people do not understand the truth about Jesus even though we have ample evidence that Jesus was God and rose from the dead.

Mark 6:31 And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”

If Jesus and His apostles needed rest, then we need rest. In the midst of all the stresses of life, we need to intentionally pursue some down time.

Mark 6:25 “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
This is what happens to men who do not guard against greed, alcohol, or sexual desire. They end up doing things they should not do or don’t want to do.
