A - Armor of God
Because we are in a spiritual war, God has provided six pieces of spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-17) that he calls believers in Jesus Christ to “put on” or “take up” as we take our stand against the devil and his schemes (Ephesians 6:11, 13 ESV).

The armor listed in Ephesians 6 includes the “belt of truth,” the “breastplate of righteousness,” the “shoes of readiness,” the “shield of faith,” the “helmet of salvation,” and the “sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

 B - Believe
The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) repeatedly emphasize our need to believe in Jesus (e.g., John 3:15). That belief is defined throughout the New Testament as faith in who Jesus is, what Jesus taught, and what Jesus has accomplished for us in his death and resurrection (e.g., Acts 16:31). It’s trusting the person, Jesus, and his Word, and all that it reveals.

Our walk with Christ begins with belief, but it also continues by believing in and trusting his Word day by day. So much of our spiritual warfare is a battle over whether or not we trust the Word of God. For Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29 ESV). Victory in spiritual war comes through believing God’s Word.

C - Captivity
Those who have not put their faith in Jesus are unwittingly held captive by Satan (Ephesians 2:2). But Jesus has come to “proclaim liberty to the captives” (Luke 4:18 ESV). How is a person set free from captivity? When a person trusts in Jesus for their salvation, he sets them free from bondage to sin (Romans 7:23), from Satan, and from the idea that we must be righteous enough to gain God’s favor (Romans 7:6; Galatians 3:23).

After a person comes to know Jesus, Satan may still try to get us to believe lies that make us captive to thinking that is contrary to the gospel, the good news about Jesus (Colossians 2:9). Only the truth about Jesus can set us free from captivity to deceptive philosophies (Colossians 2:8).

D - Devil
The devil is a real, created, spiritual being who opposes God and his people. In the Bible, the devil bears the name Satan. The devil is characterized as a liar (John 8:44), an accuser (Revelation 12:10), and a lion who looks to “devour” believers (1 Peter 5:8 ESV). He can trap and ensnare people in sin (2 Timothy 2:26), he makes false claims about God that contradict God’s commands (Genesis 3:4-5), and he teaches false doctrines that contradict the truth and mislead people (1 Timothy 4:1). He is a real personal being who even tempted Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11). While he is not to be taken lightly, the Bible promises us that Jesus has already defeated him, and we must stand in the victory Christ already won (Colossians 2:15).
