Going to realize a 13 year dream of being a Ship's Librarian this summer on the brand new Empire State VII, the first ever NVSM. Beyond thrilled. https://t.co/ukxvKzWteP
At a former position I got recruited to participate in a corporate thought exercise about building a library on Mars (don't ask). Building a library collection and services for a space you cannot see feels very similar but it's real.
It's not like he has an entire comm department, a tv station, every social media platform, and the mayor in the largest media market in the country. If only that small time rag, the New York Times would cover him!
Wait. The man holding the most well-known mayoral office in the WORLD needs $75 million to talk directly to people? Is this why he is cutting $36.2 million from libraries?
.@NYCSpeakerAdams calls @NYCMayor’s preliminary budget “unacceptable and not in the best interest of New York City.”
“This Council cannot and will not support this counterproductive approach,” she says, citing cuts to CUNY, libraries, childhood education and social services.
I'm now on my 4th search committee this semester (😭). If you are job seeking right now, a tip: we are still very much in laborer's market. If you get a job offer now is the time to ask for what you want. You will probably never have as much leverage as right now.
One last thought...if you are a LIS student or recent grad and you are applying for jobs you don't quite qualify for...that's okay! You probably won't get many interviews. But you never know who is willing to hire you on a probationary basis or work with a new career professional
More on this. It is 100% okay to address a required or preferred skill you lack and say "something I find exciting about this opportunity is gaining more experience in X". Would rather have an honest but enthusiastic candidate than someone who lies or downplays a missing skill
Also if you are looking at job ads and think a job might be slightly out of your grasp, apply anyway. If you have solid skillset for most of the requirements, but are just lacking one or two, training can be arranged.
Because here's the thing....if you don't meet the minimum requirements in your resume, why would I bother wasting my time reading a cover letter for an ineligible candidate? 🙃 Also, you may be failing to pass screening software or HR
