On the sixth day, we worship Maa Katyayani, the warrior goddess who rose to defeat Mahishasura. In the groves of Vrindavan, the gopis worshipped her on the banks of the Yamuna, and she remains a fierce protector of all that is sacred.

Assam's forests have their own Katyayanis. In August 2023, the first batch of 108 women joined Kaziranga National Park as frontline forest guards, the Van Durgas. Daughters of farming families, trained at the 11th Assam Police Battalion in Dergaon, they patrol the park by vehicle, on foot and by boat through the floods, protecting the one-horned rhino and the elephants, tigers and wild buffalo that share its home.

The Prime Minister met them in Kaziranga and called their courage truly inspiring. They prove that women belong at the very front of the effort to protect our natural heritage.

When our daughters guard our forests, they guard Assam's identity itself. May Maa Katyayani give every Van Durga strength, safety and fearlessness in the wild.

I am deeply pained to hear about the recent hate crime against two men from Nagaland who were attacked for selling non-vegetarian and northeastern food. It is disheartening to see our brothers from the northeastern region being targeted and discriminated against for their cultural identity and food choices.
