I find the Deputy Governor’s comments on the waste management crisis in Lagos embarrassing.

After being in government for at least 20 years, how can Mr Hamzat say, “We thought we were generating 13,000 tonnes on a daily basis”?

The amount of waste Lagos generates should not be a matter of guesswork. Every landfill should have a functioning weighbridge to measure the weight of waste going into the site. With that data, you can easily establish daily and monthly averages and know exactly how much waste Lagos is generating.

It is deeply worrying that Olusosun, the largest dumpsite in Lagos, doesn’t have one. Igando doesn’t have either.

So how exactly are you planning and managing waste without reliable data?

Even if we were generating 13,000 tonnes a day, does Lagos currently have the capacity and infrastructure to evacuate and properly manage it? Do we have enough trucks? Transfer stations? Recycling and processing facilities? Properly managed landfills? A modern waste-to-energy system?

Is the system transparent and accessible enough to boost private sector participation without APC patronage ?

The answer is clearly no.

And that is why Lagos is in the deplorable environmental state we see today.

And please, saying “if you go around Africa, what you see is disorganisation” is not an excuse.

Lagos should not be benchmarking itself against disorganisation. We should be setting the standard for urban management in Africa.

After over two decades in Alausa, Lagos should have the data, the infrastructure and the systems to know exactly how much waste we generate and how to manage it.

And this is not just a problem of insufficient information. It is a problem of poor planning, lack of accountability and a failure of imagination.

What the APC government has lacked the imagination and political will to solve in the last 26 years, they will not solve in another 8 years.

It is time for YOU to experience a better Lagos, a working Lagos, A Lagos that puts YOU first #OURLAGOS
