Look, the all Italian clash between Flavio Cobolli and Luca Nardi is a lot more nuanced than the head-to-head record suggests. While Nardi technically leads their series 3-1, you have to look at the context of those wins, one was a retirement and another was a high pressure fifth set tiebreaker in the NextGen format. When you strip away the history and look at the present, Cobolli is the world No. 20 for a reason. Even if his 1-2 start to 2026 hasn't been "lights out," he is still the player with the higher top-end gear and the physical tools that belong in the world's elite.
Nardi is definitely coming in with some momentum after reaching the Challenger final in Manama and taking down Basilashvili in the opening round, but heโs been living mostly on the Challenger circuit lately. He hasn't managed to beat a player of Cobolli's caliber in months. Cobolli, on the other hand, had a disappointing Australian Open exit against Arthur Fery, but he later revealed he was struggling with sudden abdominal pain right before the match. Now that heโs had time to recover and settle into the indoor courts in Montpellier, his heavy baseline game and superior fitness should start to take control.
This match is essentially about Cobolli steadying his season. Heโs the higher-ranked player with more experience at the ATP 500 and 1000 levels, and his ability to absorb pace and counter-punch is exactly what's needed to neutralize Nardiโs streaky aggression. While Nardi might feel like the "value" pick because of the H2H lead, Cobolliโs pedigree as a Top 20 player makes him the much safer bet to find his rhythm and outwork his countryman over three sets.
