As a genocide scholar, I have tried to understand the arguments I have read for why Israel’s conduct in Gaza does not constitute genocide. I struggle. The counter-arguments are not difficult. Here are 8 arguments I've heard and what I think in response. 1/n
Hamas killing civilians was horrific and wrong. That does not justify Israel killing civilians, cutting access to food and medicine, bombing hospitals, or using chemical weapons. You can't honestly condemn violence against innocents while supporting these actions from Israel.
@capebroyleriver Agreed. She should have been fired with cause for dereliction of duty/breach of contract (she has severely damaged MUN's reputation, after all!) and in an ideal world wouldn't be entitled to a cent.
Great to see some accountability at MUN, though it's a cryin' shame Vianne's getting a huge payout in exchange for her terrible leadership coming to a close. Executives always seem to fail upward, especially in this province! #NLPoli
@rlegrow @HealthAccordNL I met with members of the Health Transformation team last year to discuss SDH in NL. They're putting in the work to change what they can, but I don't think elected officials are giving sufficient support. Many of these calls to action are beyond their scope, I'm afraid. #NLPoli
Government has also chosen to avoid tax reform which could benefit low- and middle-income families alongside reducing income inequality, another significant social determinant of health. This doesn't even need to increase revenues to help out - just redistribution. #NLPoli
It's telling that this budget doesn't focus on another area important to the Health Accord - social determinants of health. Cutting education and neglecting to keep our income support programs on par with inflation will erode NLers' present and future purchasing power. #NLPoli
Newfoundland and Labrador's budget today is focused on health. It’s called “Your Health. Our Priority.” and highlights $3.9 billion health spending, the most ever (about $300 million more) #nlpoli
@RogerDo04662641@PJC709@Killernewf74 Your premise is completely wrong. Chicago has a much higher budget and around 2.5x the number of police per capita when compared with NL. If more police and more police spending made safer communities, Chicago would be much safer than our province.
MUN taking a harsher and more active stance to an unpaid member of the Board of Regents being critical of white supremacy than to its overpaid president upholding white supremacy is a LOOK. One gets called out, one gets $50k and six weeks vacation. Atrocious governance. #NLPoli
Memorial's Board of Regents is aware of social media comments made by a board member on March 17. Board members are governed by a code of conduct and bylaws. This matter will be reviewed through the processes set out in the code of conduct.
Any federal government that allows our healthcare system to deteriorate this far is upending the fundamental rights of Canadians and will have its day in court. Maybe try relieving the pressure by adding staff and resources instead of removing patients? Sickening. #CdnPoli
Randy Obenauer, 74, of Kelowna, Canada, cries as he tries to clean his own catheter. His friend had requested additional care for him, but his care providers asked if he would be interested in undergoing euthanasia instead.
@storied_selves These claims are a joke! The administration views itself as an instrument of collegial governance just because they have advanced degrees. They're still happy to dictate to faculty, staff, and students, and make consequential decisions without consultation. #FairDealAtMUN
@Himbotep We got what we paid for: vacations and vehicles for the contractors and executives with political connections, at the expense of everything else about the project. There should be criminal charges laid for Muskrat Falls, particularly the egregious misuse of public funds. #NLPoli
