Just wrapped up 4 days in Omaha and I can’t express how great this event is. It must be on your bucket list as a sports fan.
From my experience:
Stadium: 10/10
Food: 10/10
Weather: 10/10
Bar scene: 10/10
Family atmosphere: 10/10
Merch options: 10/10
Omaha: 10/10
It’s heaven.
With the news of @cucoachmac retiring, I feel like this is the right time to tell this story. It was a little thing to him and a big thing to me.
Congrats on an amazing career, Mac. Make sure you beat @nickmcdermott in golf.
In the Coachella Valley, many think of palm tree and home lined golf courses, most of them flat.
But there is one course that isn’t just unique in the area, but it’s one of the most unique golf courses on the entire planet.
If we ever get to play golf on the moon, I imagine it will be a lot like Stone Eagle, Tom Doak’s desert mountain masterpiece.
Nothing like it anywhere.
This Langer thing is like the Watson thing at the British. He came up one short but it doesn't make it any less incredible. 67 years old. Going around that place in those conditions in 147. Incredible.
@_robanderson Athletics is a great example of the inconceivable being conceived and then achieved—and this isn’t just true in athletics. We can do so much more individually and as a part of a group than most people realize. 15 top 10 wins in the past 10 years for Creighton MBB. Amazing!!
Out with the old, in with the new @QuarryOaksUSA. I’m confident you’re going to love it. 🔥
Award-winning Golf Course Architect John LaFoy has outdone himself once again.
If this 1:30 video didn’t give you enough reason to be excited, here’s a thread covering all the goods. 🧵
GrayBull Club
2024 - David McLay Kidd
GrayBull is a private facility that has been designed to be the ultimate stay and play getaway for groups. Only a max of 60 players will be on-site at a given time. It’s part of the Dormie Network, a network of now 7 private golf clubs that its members can all use.
The site is a giant expanse of rolling sand dunes. You can’t see anything for miles and it adds to the remote feeling. You often can only hear the breeze and crickets, a great reprieve of our normal lives in the city.
The course is a fun, modern take on the sand hills. A unique feature is that the cart “paths” are just fairway. Narrow strips of fairway connect the holes and you pull right up to your tee box. It speeds the game up and it’s nice to see no cart paths.
The fairways are wide, but there are some forced carries and tricky angles. The lay ups are tough on a couple of the par 5’s, not unusual to lay up into trouble if not totally focused. The greens have lots of movement and funnels, also being new turf very firm. Quite a few have no green side bunkers, allowing for lots of putts from off the greens.
The cottages are luxury and super well done. Most of them have 4 bedrooms, a bar, and common area. It is an all-inclusive stay, so food and drink is included. The steaks are incredible! The service is amazing, Dormie hospitality is always excellent.
GrayBull is an impressive entrant into the Nebraska sand hills. I think DMK had a tough challenge to differentiate the golf course from the competition and he did a very good job. Playable, fun, beautiful, and the hospitality is second to none.
If you can snag an invite, I highly recommend the journey!
Omaha area is rated by Forbes as the best place to live in the entire country. Further, Omaha has the fastest growing economy in the country as well. We have over 9% GDP growth.
In the words of Peyton Manning: “Omaha, Omaha, Omaha!”
Lost Rail outside of Omaha is the real deal. Pine Valley and Pasatiempo similarities with Nebraska hospitality. Great courses require great golf holes and they have it. @LostRailGolf
It was good to see Ras get some recognition💙
Creighton has had 2 coaches in the last 30 years both hired by this guy. He is the Godfather of Creighton Basketball.
Stone Eagle Golf Club - 2005
Tom Doak
What happens when you give Tom Doak a mountainous desert landscape, piles of dynamite, and $75 million dollars?
Stone Eagle. One of the most remarkable golf courses you will ever play.
Built into a barren desert hillside, only the bold and/or crazy would consider building a golf course here. Luckily the world is filled with crazy people.
The fairways are extremely wide. However, that doesn’t mean drives don’t have meaning. There are huge swales and bumps that can add 20 yards to your drive or send you down to a blind, uphill approach.
The greens are straight from Mars. They are giant and have huge undulations and slopes. 3 putts are common and chipping from out of position is impossible. The bunkers are deep and punishing.
The conditions are immaculate. With very low play, it’s rarely a busy place outside of the very peak season. The views of the valley are incredible, one of the best places in town to see the city.
This was our second visit and it was even better than the first. Our caddie was great, the service was great, and our host was an awesome dude. Truly one of the most unique courses on earth.
