Lou Gehrig as Tarzan?? In 1936, MGM lost the rights for the successful series of Tarzan movies to producer Sol Lesser, who went on the hunt for a new "Ape Man." Lou Gehrig's agent Christy Walsh thought the publicity of Hollywood would be good for Gehrig's career and after the 1936 World Series, he leaked the idea to the newspapers and the idea caught on. Walsh hired a photographer and a set of photos were taken, showing the massive muscles of Gehrig. However, those "iron legs", which producer Lesser called "more functional the decorative" proved his downfall, as he was deemed too muscular and bulky to portray Tarzan. The role went to Glenn Morris, the movie bombed, and Gehrig returned to first base.
