In 2002, on a TV show, iconic drag performer Jorge Lafond —forever known as Vera Verão— was asked to leave the stage at the request of Priest Marcelo Rossi, who refused to share the spotlight while Lafond was in character.

Vera Verão was one of Brazil's most beloved and groundbreaking comedy characters: a towering, sharp-witted, glamorous figure who dominated A Praça é Nossa for a decade, bringing visibility to the Black, and gay community.

Lafond was a trailblazer — the first openly gay Black comedian to achieve massive fame, a former drag queen, and a cultural force who made audiences roar with laughter.

That 2002 incident, widely seen as rooted in homophobia, deeply humiliated and wounded Lafond. He spoke about it in what became one of his last interviews, expressing hurt and disappointment.

Tragically, just months later, in January 2003, Jorge Lafond passed away from heart issues, with many believing the emotional impact of that public rejection contributed to his distress.

This moment still sparks debate about prejudice, respect, and the limits of 'entertainment' in media. Vera Verão remains an eternal icon — joyful, fierce, unforgettable.

Today’s Black American (Freedmen) inventor is Vivien Thomas. In spite of having no formal medical training or degree, he pioneered several medical breakthroughs. One was the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt that was used to save babies suffering from the "blue baby syndrome."

He also conducted essential research into traumatic/surgical shock showing that shock was caused by a lack of blood volume, not toxins. This helped refine knowledge about fluid and blood replacement therapy. He pioneered surgical atrial septal procedures.

While at AT&T Bell Laboratories, she earned 11 patents that moved speech recognition out of the lab and into real-world telecom systems. Her work on natural-language call routing and AI error-correction allowed computers to accurately parse names, numbers, and caller intent over noisy lines.
