Agree with Sanjeev ji on most occasions. Here I disagree.

Don't think there was ever a time when people voted on the candidate's merit. At least in my living memory, it is last name of the candidate that has mattered most (especially in #Bihar).

Indeed, democracy is failing!

Before: People voted for individual candidates based on their merit / development work.

Now: We vote a party symbol... as local candidates are propped at the last minute. We end up voting people who just follow the party line, not what we, the voters, want.

Essentially, we elect puppets, not leaders. Democracy is failing.
