Baseball HOF voters recent and growing obsession with WAR is probably what is keeping Mattingly Garvey Bell, and Murphy out. The informal threshold is 60 WAR for a career and none of them are even at 50. Garvey is under 40. Right or wrong this is a real thing.

I told Maddog today Kent election increases the likelihood for Whitaker. The other guy it helps as much is Chase Utley. I think they both get in now. They both dwarf Kent in WAR and that’s a crucial metric to these voters.

And an interesting fact, he dwarfs Kent in wins against replace and on both a cumulative career basis and per 162 games. The rule of thumb is 60 WAR is Hall of Fame. Kent is 55.5 and Whitaker is 75. He’s getting in.
