No Digital Billboards in SJ is working to inspire people who care about #SanJose to send the City Council the explicit message - No Digital Billboards!
No Digital Billboards in SJ. San Jose has had a ban on new billboards for 35 years. The billboard industry is doing everything they can to change that. Proposing to install > 100 digital billboards around our city. It's an affront to the environment and a bad deal for the city!
More questionable ads on #SanJose city property.
City leaders said these BBs would boost the local economy.
So why are downtown digital billboards pushing Qatar’s team and Canada tourism instead of Team USA and LOCAL World Cup events?
@SJ_Downtown@sjeconomy#SiliconValley
Bait & Switch. In 2025, the City Council approved digital billboards at 2 locations along freeways. The project plan is coming back to the City Council on May 5th because Clear Channel now wants the billboards to be bigger and taller!

Op-ed: Say no to commercial advertising on #SanJose’s downtown sidewalks

Digital #wayfinding#kiosks: civic asset or public eyesore? Most of the time the screens are advertisements. And today, everyone has a phone for navigation. Our answer: eyesore.
The #SanJose Center for Performing Arts (CPA) is now relegated to being: THE BUILDING BEHIND THE DIGITAL #BILLBOARD
We also don’t think it’s appropriate to advertise sports betting on City property!
Is this the definition of selling out? Yes.
@SJ_Downtown#DTSJ#SiliconValley
With new #digitalbillboards & now giant static billboards all over buildings, #SanJose leaders have sold-out downtown. They cater to outside interests and visitors and forget that residents who live here and support downtown 24/7/365 are really what make a great City. @sjeconomy
These distracting digital signs block views of the architecturally significant Center for Performing Arts. From the back, the signs are ugly walls. Ads for national brands will run 85% of the time.
The City’s plan includes more of these eyesores around downtown coming soon.
The first new digital #billboards in downtown #SJ are up and running. We fought to stop this because giant screens selling soda and other national brands is NOT the way to improve or attract people downtown. It’s a page out of the “how to wreck a downtown” handbook.
#SanJose Planning Director 1980s quotes:
"The ordinance is intended...to safeguard aesthetics, upgrade the appearance of the City, and promote economic development"
"The ban is an expression of the very strong commitment on the part of the city council to beautify the city"
Given widespread opposition, why has the #SanJose City Council ignored public disapproval?
Is the City moving forward or backward? Consider the mindset of City Planners who worked to enact the ban on #billboards in the 1980s vs. where we are today.

The #SanJose City Council approved 3 more new digital #billboards. Concerns from NDBSJ, residents, & environmental advocacy groups were ignored. Opening SJ to new BBs after a 40+ year ban is regressive, risky, and not the will of the people @MattMahanSJ.
The 672 sq foot digital #billboard proposed for Mission St & HWY 87 is designed to be seen by drivers 1/2 mile away on the freeway, but according to the #environmental report, people living 350 feet south of the sign will not be affected. What nonsense.
#SiliconValley#DTSJ
ACTION ALERT: First, they approved downtown digital billboards. Next week (6/17), the #SanJose City Council will consider more new #billboards @ 3 sites along freeways See a pattern? The City's Phase 2 plan described 110 BBs

@odd_dimensions Yes, the city of #SanJose can fine outdoor advertising companies. Not only have they not done this (as far as we know), but they have also ignored abandoned #billboards that stand blighted for months/years. The BB at left was in that state for 8 months near SAP Center. #DTSJ#SJC
Something IS wrong Anh Phoong.
This #billboard is on East Santa Clara Street 2 blocks from #SanJose City Hall.
Should the City reward billboard companies with new opportunities without reviewing their track record?
No!!!

@CityofSanJose Let’s find someone who can recognize our City for it’s unique attributes and truly drive meaningful economic development instead of turning us into Anyplace USA.
That means reversing course on one of the most regressive initiatives in San Jose in decades: digital billboards.
@VicenteJVera @SJSpotlight We counted 235 publicly documented Orange Barrel Media lobbyist visits to City Hall since #SanJose repealed the ban on #billboards. Add in visits from other billboard companies and the numbers go ⬆️.
NDBSJ has worked to provide facts to decision makers. But are they listening?
