There is nothing Modi loves more than a good photo-op, a slick PR exercise and the carefully cultivated image of a Vishwa Guru.

By that measure, the past few weeks must have been particularly uncomfortable for 'Saheb', as the wave of global criticism has finally caught up with him.

We almost feel sorry because he happens to be the Prime Minister of India — an office once held by greats, now reduced to a laughing stock by a man who seems to know little beyond posing for the cameras.

The tragedy is not just Modi's embarrassment. It is the indignity being inflicted on the office he occupies.
