Gangland Dublin, in the 18th century, featured a group of violent upper-class thugs called "The Pinking Dindies". Don't be deceived by their soft-sounding name. Comprising of students from Trinity College and idle rich snobs, this posh extortion gang lived up to their reputation for bloodshed and thievery, mainly directed at the innocent victims of their protection rackets.

Many members would grow up to become politicians and white-collar professionals. Richard Crosbie was their leader whilst still a student at Trinity College. In 1785, he would become the first person in Ireland to fly in a hot air balloon from Ranelagh Gardens, Dublin!

Being men of leisure, the Pinking Dindies spent a lot of time gambling and drinking in their clubhouse, an illegal casino on Essex Street. Their hunting grounds were the red light and gambling district between Christ Church and St Patrick's Cathedral.

Dressed to the nines, educated, well-fed and muscled (all signs of wealth) they plagued taverns, casinos, brothels and the cobbled lamp-lit streets of the city demanding "contributions" from rich victims and duels from poor ones. Even worse than theft, they harassed and sexually assaulted women, running protection rackets on prostitutes that worked in the many local brothels.

The gang got their name from their modus operandi. They would bump into their male victim and "pink" them. This was basically pricking/stabbing someone with the extremely sharp short swords they carried.

They also used heavy metal keys or weights attached to a silk handkerchief, which they swung at the temple. The unfortunate victim would hand over money or jewels and hope to be allowed to escape. The "Dindies" part of their name came from another word for dandies: well-dressed men, overly obsessed with their appearance.

The Pinking Dindies existed at the time when there was only a threadbare city watch and no formal police force, so the culture of posh thugs thrived. During the 1770s and 80s, the idiotic, homicidal trend of Duelling also peaked in Dublin.

Proud, wealthy men of all ages proved their manhood by escalating minor disagreements with mates and strangers into fights to the death (which I'll cover more in a later post).

Another example of this environment of violence was the walking sticks sold at popular jewellers on Dame Street. These highly fashionable walking canes were used as coshes and were bought by youngfellas looking to pick fights.

Like the slogans on t-shirts or tattoos you might see wannabe hard men wearing today, these ornate pimp canes were engraved with aggressive phrases like "Who dares sneeze?" "Who's afraid?" intended to show how tough the owner was and to provoke fights. Times may change, but rich Gobshites are forever!
