Foreigners here for the World Cup commenting on their experiences in The United States has become—by far—my favorite part of Twitter.
@FreddyLA7 and
@japan_nobunaga are the best I’ve seen thus far.
Even if the Japan one may be poking fun, it’s so good I don’t care. 😂
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.
Man, I dunno….#WrestleMania just doesn’t feel like WrestleMania anymore.
Too corporate. Too greedy. Too many commercials. No video packages to build the matches except for a half-assed one for the main event.
We’ve had exactly 60 minutes of wrestling in 3 hours and 11 minutes.
Was re-watching The Equalizer on Netflix. Took a break to make popcorn and what should I find in my email inbox but this wonderful bit of news from @SheaSerrano at GOOD MOVIE.
Extremely here for Denzember!
And, to be clear, both sides are to blame.
Disney/ESPN wants to force consumers to use their new ESPN app or Disney-owned Hulu + Live TV.
And YouTube TV, when it started, marketed itself as the cheap alternative but has quickly become anything but.
@YouTubeTV@Disney@ESPN
Let’s just go back to the old way at this point.
Cord-cutting and streaming has failed. It only took about 10 years for corporate greed to ruin it.
@YouTubeTV@Disney@espn
Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to reach a fair deal, and starting today, Disney programming will not be available on YouTube TV. This means you will no longer be able to watch channels like ABC and ESPN or access recordings from these networks in your Library.
Bummer of a loss. #Mizzou’s defense played its ass off. Zollers played as well as could be expected for a true freshman. Just too many mistakes to overcome.
I know what I’m doing this weekend….My couch and I are about to be best friends.
New seasons of:
Starting 5
Nobody Wants This
The Diplomat.
Thanks, @netflix!
