Ali Lowitzer was only 16 years old when she mysteriously vanished from her hometown of Spring, Texas, on April 26, 2010.

That Monday after school, Ali told her mom she was walking to the Burger Barn, where she worked, to pick up her paycheck. Surveillance video from Ali’s school bus confirms she got off at her stop around 3:00 p.m. It was the last time she was seen.

Through the years, Ali’s mother, JoAnn Lowitzer, has never lost hope. She transformed her pain into advocacy, raising awareness for missing persons across the country. In 2015, she founded #NationalMissingPersonsDay, which is observed each year on Ali’s birthday.

A man told authorities he had his three children in a trunk as he was being arrested for DUI in Colorado. Police officers pulled over the vehicle after they witnessed the driver, Thomas Michael Raiola, on January 23.

Authorities said the responding officer noticed the smell of alcohol and asked the driver to perform a voluntary roadside maneuver, which he at first accepted but then changed his mind. When police placed Raiola in handcuffs, he stated, “My kids are in the trunk.”

Police said there were freezing temperatures during the stop, but the kids were unharmed. Several bottles of alcohol were recovered from inside the car.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of DUI, reckless driving, failure to provide a valid insurance and three counts of child abuse, and transported to Adams County Jail. Authorities said that CPS was contacted and the kids were released to family members.
