I strongly condemn the racist threats made by FTA General Secretary Paula Manumanunitoga. No Fijian is a guest in their own country. I call on Police to investigate urgently and lay charges where warranted. Racism must have consequences.

The Constitution belongs to the people, not politicians. The PM cannot announce a referendum date before Parliament has passed the Bill. Section 160(3) must be respected.
Fiji needs proper consultation, not another imposition.

Outside Adam Smith’s home In Edinburgh. It feels strange to think that the founder of economics lived and worked here, looking out of these very windows.
Savenaca Narube might like to note this @SavenacaNarube as he has been calling for revaluation of Fiji dollar to address cost of living @nfpfiji@FijiGovernment
The Chinese yuan is no doubt undervalued. But demanding that China revalue the yuan gets both the diagnosis and the cure wrong. Our piece, with @pogourinchas & @helene_rey in the @TheEconomist is out: https://t.co/DB8pOQdF6b
This Treasury report is clear-eyed, thoughtful, and sensible. The report concludes that in 2025 no major trading partner of the US, including China, manipulated its exchange rate specifically with the intent of deriving an unfair trade advantage vis-a-vis the US. The problem of trade imbalances has to do with untenable macro-policies and not about currency manipulation.

Gautama Buddha cut himself off from the world for 6 years to escape from the chatter of society & give himself time to think. If he was born in today’s world of X, Facebook, TikTok & WhatsApp, he would have made that a 12 year stretch.
Still no good news from the tariffs. New research from Ahn, Rotunno, Ruta show that tariffs have led to a drop in the *quality* of products the US imports. So basically, the tariffs did little to reduce the prices of exports to the US and instead we rotated to cheaper lower quality imports. In addition to paying higher prices inclusive of tariffs the quality has dropped. https://t.co/ZkWZloBaFN
It was a pleasure to meet with @Canada's High Commissioner to Fiji, Jennifer Lalonde, and discuss the strong and growing partnership between our two countries. @CanHCNZ 🇫🇯🇨🇦
🙏We also acknowledged the significant Fijian diaspora in Canada, whose contributions continue to strengthen the enduring friendship between our two countries.
Thank you, Ambassador Seet-Cheng, for the good discussion on a number of issues, and for the thoughtful gift of the book “How Singapore Beat the Odds”, which offers valuable insights into Singapore’s remarkable development journey. 🇫🇯🇸🇬 (2/2) @MFAsg

The “invisible hand” appears first time in The Wealth of Nations on p. 423. When Adam Smith prepared the index to his book in 1784 he didn’t include it in the Index. Clearly, he didn’t realize most people would treat the invisible hand as his most important contribution.
How does a student who wanted to study "absolutely nothing" wind up becoming the Chief Economist of the World Bank?
Meet Prof. @kaushikcbasu, Jury Chair for the Infosys Prize 2026 in Economics.
When Prof. Basu finished high school, his father wanted him to pursue physics. In a brilliant compromise born out of revolutionary times, they settled on economics. Safe to say, that compromise worked out incredibly well for the entire world!
From his undergraduate days at St. Stephen's College to earning his PhD at the London School of Economics, Prof. Basu has injected unmatched wit and life into a field often mislabeled as a dry science. He went on to hold high-profile policymaking seats as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and the Chief Economist at the World Bank. He even led the global academic community as the President of the International Economic Association!
Along the way, he collected major accolades, including India's prestigious Padma Bhushan and the international Humboldt Research Award. He also found time to create DuiDoku, a two-player game inspired by Sudoku, proving that his love for puzzles extends well beyond economics.
Whether he is teaching his favorite game theory puzzles to classrooms at Cornell or challenging traditional metrics to prioritize human well-being, his incredible wisdom brings invaluable guidance to our selection process. We are delighted to welcome back Prof. Basu as Jury Chair.
