With respect, the Kosova War was not a war between Muslims and Orthodox Christians. It was primarily a campaign of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Milošević regime against Kosova Albanians, regardless of their religion.

Albanian Muslims, Catholics, and even secular families were all targeted because they were Albanian, not because of their faith. International courts concluded that Serbian forces conducted a widespread campaign of deportations, killings, and persecution against Kosova Albanians.

One of the largest and most brutal massacres of the Kosova War occurred in Meja (Mejë) on 27 April 1999. The village is predominantly Albanian Catholic. Serbian police and Yugoslav Army forces separated Albanian men and boys from refugee convoys and executed at least 377 civilians, both Catholics and Muslims. This alone disproves the claim that the conflict was a religious war between Islam and Orthodoxy, the victims were targeted because they were Albanian.

Influential bishops from Serbian Orthodox Church and clergy also promoted Serbian nationalist narratives that portrayed the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosova. Many church leaders gave moral legitimacy to nationalist policies, blessed military units, or remained silent in the face of atrocities.

This relationship between parts of the Church and Serbian nationalism has been widely documented.
