ETHIOPIA: The ethically motivated forced displacement and demographic engineering in Oromia and Addis Ababa is a form of ethnic-cleansing and must immediately stop. 

In a country that currently holds the world record for the most number of internally displaced people (IDP), it's inhumane and counter-productive for the Ethiopian govt to conduct forced eviction and home demolition campaigns. An immediate moratorium on demolishing and forced evictions must be declared!

According to local media, survivors and eyewitnesses, thousands of residents and students in the Kolfe neighborhood of Addis Ababa were attacked today by police for protesting the government's demolition of homes and the forced evictions of thousands of families in and around Addis Ababa.

Just a few days ago, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (@EthioHRC) condemned the government for these ethnically motivated discriminatory evictions and human rights violations.

Pushing ethnic minorities in the Oromia region and the people of Addis Ababa into a corner will backfire on @AbiyAhmedAli and exacerbate the unprecedented humanitarian crises in #Ethiopia. Today's unrest in the Kolfe (ኮልፌ) neighborhood of Addis Ababa is a sign.

We call for an immediate eviction moratorium in and around Addis Ababa to stop the unnecessary and massive displacement of citizens.

Apr. 1/23 - Government forces abducted Shewa Development Association Director Assistant Professor Sisay Awgichew from his home on Mar. 31. Sisay had delivered 500,000 birr in aid to IDPs in Debre Birhan & was preparing to deliver mattresses.

The Ethiopian Government has detained over 150 people in the past two days. The Deputy President of the Balderas for Genuine Democracy party, Mr. Amaha Dagnew was one of those abducted from their homes. The government has been repeatedly targeting Balderas Party leaders, followers and supporters. On March 11, 2023, the Deputy President Amaha was detained and released after they aimlessly transferred him between many holding stations making it hard for his colleagues and family to find out where he was held. He was picked up without any warrant or justification. He is now once again abducted without explanation on April 1, 2023.

The government has been constantly banning Balderas For Genuine Democracy, a legally registered political party, from holding their mandatory general assembly meeting, which is a requirement to finalize their national status. The government often uses a combination of scare tactics to prevent such gatherings from happening, these include detailing prominent party leaders, harassing business venues so that they refuse to host meetings etc.

The current detention of Mr. Amaha Dagnew however, seems related to the abduction spree the government conducted against prominent Amharas after a call for an all out anti-government protest was made across Amhara Region cities by a body called the Amhara Public Committee. The protest was held on April 2nd, 2023. The government has not yet released over a hundred ethnically profiled Amahras that were detained ahead of the protest. The government also conducted forced entry into homes of a number of Amharas across major cities. The agents were reported to harass and go through peoples’ houses without any warrant or explanation.
