Canada’s Climate Ambassador, Catherine Stewart congratulating UK on its early phase out this year, and sharing the transition in Ontario and Alberta. Inspiring examples of the coal transition happening faster than anyone had expected. #SolutionsDialogues
I can’t think of a more appropriate location than @BatterseaPwrStn for PPCA’s High Level Dialogue on coal transition with Fatih Birol kicking off w challenges and momentum, and a call for the 2025 #NDCs to include no new unabated coal + early retirement. #SolutionsDialogues
- Notley government (and tireless staff in AB Environment and AB Energy) for the 2030 phase-out commitment which got everyone looking at this more seriously + the most effective electricity sector carbon pricing scheme I have seen
- AB System Operator for managing a rapidly evolving grid while maintaining reliability and affordability.
- AB power generators for pursuing a wide set of solutions for replacement from RE, battery, co-firing, to efficient gas units.
And so many more!
We’ll likely see much better analysis from folks soon, and the full story is of course chaotic. But a quick set of hat tips :
- Harper govt for the very first coal phase-out regs in 2012
- Environmental and health NGOs for making a clear economic and health case.
What a milestone for Alberta and its electricity industry as our power becomes coal-free! As late as 2015, we were looking at a 2061 phase out. This is a master class in the impact of good policy making and Alberta’s market structure.
BREAKING: #COP28 Presidency holder, United Arab Emirates🇦🇪 joins the PPCA today, alongside Malta. Together, we will drive actions on #coal phase-out at this COP.
The task is to secure a global agreement on #nonewcoal and coal phase-out in line with 1.5°C. https://t.co/x9Vt9hbG5P
#COP28 opens with remarkable actions on #coal phase-out:
✔️The US & 9 other members join the PPCA,
✔️France launches a new initiative to support the global move from coal to #renewables,
✔️118 countries recognise the need to end new coal
Our roundup: https://t.co/xKjGUOnKix
So surreal to be outside the room where this happened. It’s amazing to see even a fraction of the civil servants, ministerial staff, and CSOs that make something like this happen.
A massive positive step for climate and a huge milestone for @PastCoal as the US joins the PPCA. Major props to the UK and Canada governments for paving the way here. #COP28
BREAKING: 10 new members, including the United States🇺🇸, the Czech Republic🇨🇿, Cyprus🇨🇾, Dominican Republic🇩🇴, Iceland🇮🇸, Kosovo🇽🇰 and Norway🇳🇴 join the PPCA at #COP28 today, in an extraordinary leap forward in moving away from #coal around the world.

Great reference to renewables and coal as #COP28 opened. And great context setting by @CleanPowerDave on the tangible role renewables play in the transition.
Al Jaber opening speech: "Tripling renewables is how we transition away from unabated coal"
Yes it is. It can deliver a halving of coal power by 2030👏
But it achieves so much more as well: over half of the tripling renewables is used to meet growing electricity demand to electrify the economy and cut each of coal, oil and gas use...

A net-zero grid is critical for Canada to remain competitive in the low-carbon economy and will provide affordable and reliable power to Canadians.
Our report outlines the pathways to #NetZero ➡ https://t.co/kMw5a61uOT
There are so many actions around proactive and productive planning and rule-making that need to be taken to get to a clean grid on pace with the rest of the world. A moratorium on the cheapest source of electricity is not one of them. https://t.co/N8E5FbQzxa
Historically (and currently), Alberta has imported more electricity than it has exported. A clean grid offers new economic opportunities for #AB to increase revenues from its energy resources.
Here’s what we need to make it happen: (🧵)
It doesn't mean it's easy, and there are a lot of ppl within government, system operator, regulator, industry etc. who are working hard at the solutions. This will certainly be an exciting decade!
Excited to share our new analysis on how Alberta can decarbonize its grid reliably & affordably by 2035! Given that AB has exceeded the ambitious scenarios of all previous Pembina reports on this, I'm feeling quite optimistic and am happy to be wrong again #ABEnergy#NetZeroGrid
🆕📃 NEW REPORT: “Zeroing In: Pathways to an affordable net-zero grid in Alberta”
Our latest report explores scenarios that demonstrate how Alberta can decarbonize its grid by 2035 in a cost-effective and reliable manner.
