A report was published yesterday on the front page of The Indian Express titled ‘14 times in 10 months, two Election Commissioners objected on record to poll panel steps’. This has caused a stir across the country. Towards the end of 2025, prior to the municipal elections, whenever we, leaders of opposition parties in Maharashtra, met the State Chief Election Commissioner and his colleagues, it became evident that they possessed no real authority. I have stated this publicly on numerous occasions; both I and my party have openly raised doubts, or leveled allegations, call it what you will, regarding the functioning of the Election Commission. This report confirms the veracity of what we had been saying all along.

Let alone the State Election Commission; when even two commissioners within the Central Election Commission are sidelined, with decisions implemented while keeping them in the dark or completely disregarding their views, one thing becomes crystal clear: the concept of an autonomous Election Commission is now merely a theoretical notion found in books. Under the current dispensation, ‘autonomy’ is defined as ‘subservience to the Bharatiya Janata Party’. If that condition is met, the body is considered autonomous, otherwise it is not. The objections raised by Election Commissioners Mr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Mr. Vivek Joshi are serious, and it is impossible for the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Gyanesh Kumar, to dismiss them. Suffice it to say that the identity of the true architect behind his actions is evident.

I am deliberately sharing the link to this Indian Express report here. Every Indian citizen should make the time to read it. You vote and desire change, but this report holds the answers as to why that change will never actually happen.

Over the past ten months, Election Commissioners Mr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Mr. Vivek Joshi have gone on record to criticize the Election Commission's functioning on fourteen separate occasions; yet the Commission remained unmoved and proceeded to do exactly as it intended. The Election Commission currently comprises of three chief members: one Chief Election Commissioner—Gyanesh Kumar—and two Election Commissioners—Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. Two of them raised objections, creating the impression that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was making decisions arbitrarily. However, he was actually being compelled to take those decisions. These objections arose within a span of fourteen months. Gyanesh Kumar was appointed in February 2025. This means that he began pleasing his superiors almost immediately upon assuming office.

Here is a brief outline of the objections raised by the other two Commissioners:
They stated in writing that certain orders regarding voter registration, the deletion of names, and the voter list software were issued without the Commission's approval.
'Form 6' included a query asking whether the applicant's name, or that of a family member, had appeared in the previous electoral roll. The two Commissioners argued that the Commission lacked the authority to ask this and it would necessitate a change in the law.
The powers of local electoral registration officers were drastically curtailed, effectively stripping them of the authority to decide on modifications to the electoral roll; the software left local election officials with virtually no power to make such changes.
In Goa, local officials verified documents and determined that 97 individuals were eligible; however, the software did not provide a timely facility to re-include their names. Consequently, their names did not appear in the final electoral roll. If an official deems a voter eligible but the name fails to appear on the list due to technical reasons, who should be held accountable? (1/2)

So the ECI has now responded to the @IndianExpress investrigation by saying that internal observations are a normal part of deliberation, that its decisions follow the law, that its digital systems have security controls, and that the Commission's decisions over the past year were unanimous.

However, the press note (attached) does not appear to answer several of the specific questions raised in the investigation.

In particular:

Were the reported 14 objections actually recorded, and what was the disposition of each?
What was the specific legal basis for the changes to Form-6, particularly after objections were recorded by Commissioners?
What happened to the concerns regarding centralisation of electoral-roll database access and IT control?
What is the ECI's explanation for the reported Goa case involving 97 voters?
Who authorised the appeals concerning voters whose inclusion had been restored, and under what procedure?
What were the circumstances behind the reported communications to the Cabinet Secretary?
Were any communications issued in the name of the Commission without the requisite approval, as reported?

The distinction seems important: saying that final decisions were unanimous does not, by itself, explain what happened to objections raised during the decision-making process.

It may therefore be useful for @ECISVEEP to provide a point-by-point, documentary clarification on these matters rather than treating the general press note as a complete response to the investigation.

Given the importance of electoral institutions, these questions are worth being placed on the public record and answered transparently.

I think some opposition parties are beginning to realize that they cannot win elections through the electoral process.

That’s why they are now questioning the system itself and spreading unverified rumors to create the perception that the system is biased and make citizens lose faith in it.

The goal seems to be to create distrust among citizens, trigger unrest, and then use that unrest to challenge the existing system and eventually come to power by exploiting the chaos they have created.
