The same tools reshaping cybercrime are also changing how terrorism can be financed.

“[AI] is democratizing the scam landscape, so anyone can get involved, and I think we’re just starting to see the beginning of that,” said Moyara Ruehsen, a professor emerita and former director of the Financial Crime Management Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. “It’s like a tsunami wave heading toward our societies.”

AI, cryptocurrency, social media, and crowdfunding have made it easier to raise and move money across borders. And as these capabilities become more accessible, so too do the opportunities to exploit them.

An estimated $11.5 billion in illicit financial flows supported terrorist financing globally in 2023. In our latest Dark Economy piece, we examine the longstanding role fraud has played in terrorist financing, and how that relationship is evolving in an increasingly digital world.

Fraudsters operate in networks. Fighting them requires collaboration.

Access our Fraud Talks Hub to hear fraud leaders discuss what stronger industry collaboration could look like, from breaking down barriers between institutions to sharing intelligence that can help detect and stop fraud sooner.

Because the more we see together, the harder it becomes for fraud to hide.

@DatosInsights has recognized BioCatch DeviceIQ in the Best Authentication Innovation category of its 2026 Fraud Impact Awards.

"As fraud increasingly targets devices before login and beneath traditional detection layers, the limitations of legacy device controls have increased the risk for institutions," says Chuck Subrt, fraud and AML practice director at Datos Insights. "BioCatch DeviceIQ generates a persistent global device identity that remains stable across sessions, institutions, and device changes and delivers pre-login threat detection."

Scammers don't need to hack a system if they can manipulate the person using it.

That's what makes the psychology behind social engineering so important to understand. And it's the focus of a conversation in the latest episode of Nick Stapleton's Scam Clinic.

At around 25:40, Nick sits down with Pedro Adamović, chief information security officer at Banco Galicia, to unpack two of the tactics scammers rely on most: creating a sense of urgency that pushes victims to act quickly, and impersonating trusted authorities, from banks to police officers.

It's a useful look at why social engineering remains so effective, and why stopping scams requires understanding not just what customers are doing, but the circumstances influencing their behavior.

Over the last decade, banks have built sophisticated fraud stacks around identity, devices, transactions, and digital intelligence. The latest research from @IDC argues, in today's landscape, one signal layer now stands above the rest: behavioral intelligence.

AI can mimic credentials, documents, and even legitimate customer sessions. It still struggles to convincingly replicate the physiological and cognitive patterns that reveal human intent.

Jonathan Daly's latest blog explores why IDC identifies behavioral intelligence as the most critical signal layer.

Agents will soon log in, check balances, and move money on behalf of real customers every day. The challenge for banks won't be recognizing agents. It'll be knowing which ones deserve to be trusted.

In a new blog, BioCatch's Ofer HaCohen explores how behavioral intelligence, tooling, and device history can help banks distinguish the legitimate agents from the malicious.

For years, banks competed on how well they could verify identity. But as social engineering, scams, and AI-driven attacks have evolved, identity alone is no longer enough.

The new competitive advantage belongs to those institutions that can continuously and persistently recognize intent, distinguishing genuine customers from those acting under the coercion, manipulation, or direction of a bad actor.

In a new blog, Jonathan Daly introduces The Recognition Economy, a new framework for how banks will compete by combining stronger fraud prevention with better customer experiences through behavioral intelligence.
