We call to action and catalyze practical, community-driven conservation of critical habitats and threatened species, bridging science and indigenous knowledge.
🚧 The Illasit–Taveta road project brings new opportunities for people, but big projects also affect nature.
To keep the balance, ~USD 450,000 has been set aside for a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) — a roadmap to avoid, reduce, restore & compensate for impacts on nature. 🌍✨

🌍 What are Biodiversity Offsets?
They are conservation actions that compensate for unavoidable impacts of development projects — but only after impacts have been avoided, minimized & restored. #TilapiaChala#AdoptARiver
⚖️ How are offsets different from other conservation?
They are directly tied to damage from a project and are designed to fully compensate for that loss. General conservation is voluntary — offsets are a must.
KeNHA DG, Eng. Kungu Ndungu handed over the Illasit-Njukini-Taveta road site to Sinohydro Corporation Ltd for maintenance ahead of construction, set to begin in mid-February 2025.
The 66.5km road, running from Taveta to Illasit, will be completed in 30 months under an EPC arrangement.
The project includes a 7m carriageway with 1.5m shoulders, new bridges, box culverts, street lighting in major centres, and improved junctions.
The road will enhance economic activities, particularly in agriculture and tourism.

The #15BillionTrees Secretariat has wrapped up the fourth week of its sensitization mission on the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration (NLER) Strategy 2023–2032, holding discussions with several State Departments including Basic Education, Broadcasting and Telecommunication, ICT and the Digital Economy.
The ongoing campaign seeks to strengthen coordination and accountability in Kenya’s landscape restoration efforts, in line with the presidential directive to grow #15BillionTreesBy2032.
During the engagements, inadequate resourcing was identified as a key challenge slowing down progress. The Secretariat underscored the need for ministries to allocate stronger budgetary support to tree-growing initiatives and called for enhanced collaboration with private sector players, development partners, and civil society organizations. These partnerships, officials noted, will be critical in bridging resource gaps and accelerating the nationwide campaign.
Departments further shared success stories of collaborating with local communities, noting that contributions of land, labor, and indigenous knowledge have significantly boosted tree survival rates. They pledged to intensify their commitment to the presidential directive by aligning their plans with the NLER Strategy, reaffirming their role in steering Kenya toward a greener, climate-resilient future.
Ms. Florence Mwachoki from the #15BillionTrees Secretariat, emphasized that with stronger partnerships and sustained commitment across all sectors, the ambitious target of 15 billion trees is within reach.

These 6 objectives form the heart of the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). Together, they protect our lakes, rivers, forests, wildlife corridors — and our future. 💚
When nature thrives, communities thrive too. 🌿✨
