Rising biological sciences junior, Megan Toms, is participating in the MAOP Internship program in Dr. Brown's lab this summer!🌞@Biochem_Anne
"MAOP was a great opportunity to get research experience & make connections with other students & faculty through this research program."
Please check out our new publication that uses a cool technique to identify a mutation that likely was necessary for SARS-CoV-2 emergence into humans. Great collaboration with @Biochem_Anne@Biochem_Amanda@Opiniomics Lin Kang and others.
Now online! A change within the Spike protein of #SARSCoV2 shows higher binding affinity to hACE2 and enhanced replication in human lung cells

Biochemistry student Erin Collins participated in the Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference this year. Erin presented on Using Virtual Screening to Develop Predictive Models to Discover Novel Partial Agonists of PPARγ. Way to go, Erin! 👏
Biochem sophomore Anthony Briganti participated in the Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference this year. Anthony presented on Combating Antibacterial Resistance: Characterizing Antibiotic Binding Pockets to Advance Bidentate Design. Awesome job! 👏
Our recent pub in collab with @AlessandroPiai and Chou Lab at HarvardMed! We used MD sims to explore the stability of the NMR model gp41 baseplate where we observed an ascending concerted movement in the CT domain and local membrane thinning. Check it out! @Biochem_Anne#compchem
We did it! We derived, for the first time, a complete #NMR model of the ENTIRE membrane-interacting region of the #HIV‑1 fusion protein and described its perturbation of membrane morphology. Thank you @Biochem_Anne for the amazing collaboration! @J_A_C_S

Biochem major, Truitt Elliott, is 1/2 students assigned to the COVID-19 database project.
"Working on this project required me to learn new skills quickly, but I've been able to use what I've learned about web scripting to focus more on web development & database management."
Happening today! I'm excited to be presenting how our lab has utilized methods to enhance student learning during remote education! @Biochem_Anne and I will be presenting at 10:36 am during the Biophysics Education platform (33). @BiophysicalSoc#BPS2021
Thank you Dr. Anne Brown @Biochem_Anne for the fascinating talk to #VTGBCB about computational simulations and dynamic modelling of these intricate molecular interactions related to HIV and Alzheimer.
After months of planning & rescheduling thanks to COVID, we finally got the opportunity to explore @CharkoudianLou's work with how nature makes molecules and her involvement with @FailureMindset. Thanks for the fantastic seminar & discussion! Hopefully we can meet in person soon!
[Disclaimer: Photos were taken at last year's EngelPalooza pre-COVID-19].
EngelPalooza is TODAY! If you’ve registered, be sure to join us at 6 today!!
Special thanks to Amanda Sharp (@biochem_amanda) for setting us up for success for this year's EngelPalooza! Thank you!
@pyroov8 I started out at Piedmont Virginia CC then transferred to Virginia Tech for a BS in biochem. I ended up staying at VT, got a master's in biochem, and am now a PhD student in an interdisciplinary program. I also help manage my lab, which we are very CC student friendly.
