Baby Vision Screener (BaViS): A new tool for assessing visual fields in children
Children with cerebral visual impairment (CVI) often have visual field defects, but reliable field-testing in young or developmentally challenged children still remains difficult. Existing clinical tools are limited, especially for infants and children who cannot perform standard perimetry.
Researchers at the Brien Holden Institute of Optometry and Vision Sciences in Hyderabad demonstrated that the Baby Vision Screener (BaViS) can reliably measure the visual field extent in children with cerebral visual impairment (CVI). Their findings also indicated that visual field defects are common in this population, frequently occurring alongside reduced visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
This work highlights BaViS's potential for broader clinical use, including monitoring and early intervention in children with visual disorders like CVI, congenital glaucoma, and cataract, which have also been tested with the device.
