Countries in the Global South have large amounts of #biomass residues that largely remain unutilized. While most economies currently heavily depend on fossil energy (oil, coal), renewable #bioenergy options still are in early development stages. Large numbers of poor households rely on biomass (wood, charcoal) for cooking and heating with detrimental effects on health and landscapes. Meanwhile, underfertilization practices deprive agricultural soils from essential crop nutrients and soil organic matter thus reducing crop yields that are threatened by climate change.
Join this #EUBCE2026 parallel event if you would like to get a state-of-the-art inventory of research and innovative practices on biomass valorisation in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as examples from research projects, commercial initiatives and development programs.
This parallel event is organized by: Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Netherlands Enterprise Agency, Biomass Research B.V., NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Delft University of Technology, Alliance pour le Biodigesteur en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre.

Last week, we held a succesful meeting on biomass valorisation for the Global South. Dennis Barbian (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) presented an excellent overview of the African Biodigester Component (ABC, https://t.co/859ParISFg) program.
Healthy landscapes support healthy livelihoods.
That’s why we work across forests, farms, wetlands, and drylands, turning science into action for people, nature, and climate.
Something is growing.

Interest in biomass availability is increasing. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz is pushing up energy and fertilizer prices once again. Biomass, waiting to be included in innovative value chains, can generate methane, hydrogen and valuable organic fertilizers.

IEA Bioenergy is organising an online workshop on “Sustainable Biomass Availability and Mobilisation”, which will be held on 17 June at two different times, to accommodate participants from different parts of the world. The objective of this workshop is to explore how to secure sufficient biomass availability and how to organise (upstream) mobilisation under sustainable conditions, taking into account other functions that have to be met with biogenic resources, e.g., securing – or strengthening – human food and animal feed security, biodiversity, soil quality, closing nutrient cycles, and social systems.

In times with rising fuel and fertilizer prices, it is crucial to utilise all resources for cooking and food production. Anaerobic digestion provides a clean and cheap fuel and organic fertilizers that build soil quality and boost crop yields. #biogas#digestate#bioslurry

In March 2026, renewables officially beat natural gas to become the largest source of electricity generation on the U.S. grid for the first time in history (35% to 34.4%). Meanwhile, Texas is plugging in a massive 12.9 GW of grid batteries this year alone, capturing 53% of the entire U.S. pipeline, to eat legacy gas margins for breakfast
In California, batteries just smashed records, meeting 44.1% of evening peak demand and physically evicting gas peakers from the grid
In China, firm, 24/7 solar + storage is already delivering round-the-clock electricity at a record cost floor of $30/MWh. Compare that to new gas-fired generation at well over $100/MWh. Gas is dead on arrival
In the UK, Germany, and Spain, building a brand-new wind + storage asset from scratch is now cheaper than simply paying for the fuel and maintenance of an existing, already-built gas or coal plant. In Germany, 24/7 firm onshore wind is delivering at $91/MWh, making new gas options (>$100/MWh) look like an expensive 20th-century liability
Countries still building gas plants or signing 20-year LNG import contracts, are signing a national security suicide note and managing a structural bankruptcy
Gas power is going through a slow death to near-zero by 2035 (latest). Save this post.
