This apology is not complete and it’s frankly unacceptable. You didn’t address the main people/state government you wronged and falsely accused.
Your apology should also be to the people of Ogun State, Abeokuta, and most importantly, the Ogun State Government.
You said the Algerian fans didn’t damage the seats, that the seats were already damaged. Meaning Ogun State left broken seats there at the well-maintained stadium. You attempted to throw our government and the governor under the bus and painted us liars. Thanks to the honest people who stood their ground to correct you, without them, your lies would have led to another round of dragging of the state government for lack of maintenance.
MKO Abiola Stadium is one good stadium that even the Algerian team was proud of. Yet, rather than appreciate it as a Nigerian and/or wait till you verify information, you chose to go the route of the typical Nigerian pessimist and negaholic.
Do the right thing.
Attack the government all you want, but don’t use that as an excuse to attack an entire tribe simply because the president is from there. My people have woken up. This is not 2023 anymore.
They are always quick to criticise whenever something terrible happens in Nigeria, but now that the fake alcohol gang has been busted, suddenly everyone is mute. You don’t want a better Nigeria; you just want your people in power. 🫵🏿
They are rewriting your history right in front of you, and you are applauding them. 😍😍 Aww, the woke generation!
When the time comes, they will gaslight those of us who speak up and accuse us of being tribalistic, intolerant, or even worse than our parents’ generation. Yet, these same people take immense pride in their own culture. They defend it, preserve it, and proudly claim what belongs to them. But somehow, when it comes to us, we are expected to be quiet, accommodating, and ashamed of taking pride in our own heritage.
These same people are loudly claiming what belongs to us, with their full chest and absolutely no shame. And rather than question them, some of you will join in because you think being liberal means you are more enlightened or better than those of us who refuse to let our history be distorted.
There is a difference between respecting other people’s cultures and allowing people to rewrite yours. There is a difference between being open-minded and being so desperate to appear progressive that you abandon your own people’s history and heritage. You can respect other cultures without surrendering your own.
What saddens me the most is that some of you will never hold others to the same standards you hold your own people. You will scrutinize our traditions, mock our pride, and demand that we be accommodating, while giving others a free pass to do whatever they want with ours.
It is a shame, honestly. But I will do everything in my power to ensure my children grow up knowing who they are, where they come from, and what their heritage means. I refuse to raise children who are so afraid of being called tribalistic that they become strangers to their own culture, or so desperate for validation from others that they cannot stand firmly in their identity.
Being proud of your heritage is not hatred for another culture. Defending your history is not tribalism. And respecting others should never require you to disrespect yourself.
