“...condensed matter physicists study nonliving matter, and biological physicists study living matter...you will have a hard time convincing me that you and I and other living creatures are not the most interesting matter in the universe.” - Rob Phillips

If you evolve SARS2 in a test tube without an immune system to evade, and only select for binding affinity, you get Omicron.
This demonstrates how lab conditions are different from the natural world (besides immunocompromised?) and can lead to new hazards. https://t.co/WxrmqqWEjT

Viking sagas described a “sunstone” that could reveal the sun through clouds, and in 2013 a calcite crystal found in a shipwreck near the Channel Islands showed how it may have worked — by splitting light into two beams that, when aligned, could pinpoint the sun’s exact position even under full cloud cover.
For centuries, historians believed the Viking “sunstone” was just a myth from Norse legend. The sagas described a mysterious crystal called a sólarsteinn that could reveal the sun’s position even through thick clouds, allowing Viking sailors to navigate the open ocean when the sky offered no guidance. Most scholars dismissed the stories as folklore.
Then the sea gave up its secret.
In 2013, marine archaeologists excavating a shipwreck near the Channel Islands discovered a translucent crystal stored alongside navigational instruments. Testing confirmed it was Iceland spar, a pure form of calcite with extraordinary optical properties.
When light passes through Iceland spar, it splits into two beams. By rotating the crystal until both beams match in brightness, the user can pinpoint the sun’s exact location even under complete cloud cover, fog, or twilight conditions.
Researchers later demonstrated that the crystal could determine the sun’s position with remarkable accuracy, potentially explaining how Viking navigators crossed the North Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland, and even North America centuries before modern navigation tools existed.
