DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA - The highly-anticipated Preview Copy Tweet ๐ท๐๐-๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ wrapped up recently, leaving behind a powerful joint statement from the Seed Working Group of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa, together with allies from across 27 African countries.
This collective, representing a diverse set of stakeholders from farmers to legal experts, came together to emphasize the pressing concerns surrounding #seedsovereignty in the continent.
Central to the conference's deliberations were the potential threats posed by #GMOs and new and emerging biotechnologies, the importance of Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) in safeguarding #foodsovereignty, and the call for collaborative continental strategies.
Concerns were also raised about corporate entities, like #AGRA, attempting to influence #seed policies to their advantage and the implications of the African Continental Free Trade Area on seed privatization.
As a way forward, the group outlined a series of recommendations. Among them were the establishment of legal mechanisms to support farmers, strengthening of #FMSS through policy interventions, and the creation of seed exchange networks.
The statement stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to championing farmers' rights and resisting corporate control over Africa's seed systems.
