#BirdNamesForBirds - because birds don't need eponymous or honorific common names. Bird names should be about birds. After all, it’s more than McCown's Longspur
An excellent thread!
I believe I said in an interview somewhere on the subject that when I was a kid I kinda thought eponym names kinda sounded like wizard names, and honestly until I started researching them for BN4B that was still the case...
Just do it. I promise you that birders can handle new names (especially descriptive ones) for their birds. All the names are new to beginners. @BirdNames4Birds
Example
(tired): Bewick was a friend of Audubon's (the latter probs owed him money).
(wired): Gray-bellied Wren
This upcoming week is going to be a big one and you’ll want to stay tuned…it’s the AOS meeting with votes, presentations, and more regarding all things bird names.
Make sure you’re following our account and #BirdNamesForBirds wherever works best for you now.
We’re officially on Threads and Blue Sky! In addition to our original platforms - Facebook, Instagram, and this one.
Same base handle everywhere (due to character limit) - @/BirdNames4Birds
But the hashtag is spelled out - #BirdNamesForBirds

One year I promise I will genuinely get my act together and go to @GlobalBirdfair given its pretty local to me...
Also if anyone organising is reading, just throwing it out there that you could have @BirdNames4Birds and/or @SciAndSorcery material to your schedule...
no todos los días tu periodista científico favorito escribe un artículo para el que te entrevista y habla sobre una iniciativa a la que le has dedicado mucho tiempo y energía. y el artículo, como se esperaba, es maravilloso y profundo. gracias @edyong209!
🐦I wrote a piece about the movement to stop naming animals after people--and to remove existing eponyms.
It's a story about righting science's historical wrongs, but also about reconsidering the responsibilities inherent in naming things. 1/
